Algarroba CostaAlgarrobo Costa forms part of four urbanizations in the municipality of Algarroba on the Costa del Sol in Andalusia. Situated 37 kilometres from the city of Malaga and airport, the town lies on the Scenic Route of Sun and Wine in the Axarquia region.
The town was once a fishing port, but is now a busy tourist centre, with lots of apartment blocks and hotels. It’s two neighbours of Lagos and Mezquitilla are still both fairly unspoilt villages, untouched by tourism.
Local regionThe municipality of Algarrobo consists of four urbanisations: Algarroba Costa, Lagos, Mezquitilla and Algarrobo Pueblo, located inland. The area sits within the region of the Axarquia in Andalusia, situated to the east of the Velez River.
The area is blessed with a wonderful coastline, combined with an inland countryside landscape of outstanding natural beauty. The Algarrobo-Sayalonga River flows down from the stunning Sierra Almijara and the region dates back to the Bronze Age.
Algarrobo Costa suits those who wish to combine beach and countryside. The region provides a wonderful base for walking holidays and to explore the surrounding Costa Tropical and Costa del Sol.
About town Algarroba Costa is a busy tourist resort, well supplied with amenities such as supermarkets, shops, bars and restaurants. There is an attractive promenade for an early morning jog, or evening stroll.
Climbing up the Ejido hillside away from the coast, there are a number of interesting cultural attractions including a pretty 17th century church.
The area has many watchtowers, which date back to the Moorish occupation in the local region.
BeachesThe town has its own sandy beach, and the whole coastline is blessed with stretches of pretty golden sandy beaches.
Eating outThere are a good choice of bars and restaurants, and visitors should try the delicious, local Algarrobo cakes.
ClimateAlgarrobo Costa enjoys the sub-tropical Mediterranean climate with hot summers and warm winters. Algarrobo’s close proximity to the sea affords cooling breezes, which make the summer heat manageable, when temperatures average 32 ºC in summer.
