The Top 10 Urban Places and Spaces on Gran Canaria

Urban Gran Canaria will provide you with some super snaps of your holiday. The city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the towns on the island are so photogenic, as you're about to discover. Go make souvenirs for your loved ones back home.

Agüimes

Agüimes

You'll want to walk at a snail's pace when you're navigating Agüimes which, depending on your flight time, could be the first of your Gran Canaria day trips. Such is the power of its old town to reduce you to a state of almost complete relaxation. Agüimes is the very first town you'll hit if travelling south from Gran Canaria's airport.

Artenara

Artenara

There's not much going on in Artenara. Which only adds to its appeal as the temptation to kick back and do nothing is an impossible one to resist. You'll certainly earned the right to enjoy the view as Artenara is one of the most out-of-the-way municipalities on Gran Canaria.

Arucas

Arucas

Overlooking Arucas, you'll find the Montaña de Arucas. This mountain was the battlefield in 1481 when the Spanish invader Pedro de Vera killed the noble canarii warrior, Doramas. But the beautifully-preserved centre of Arucas is less war than peace, with visitors able to enjoy its charms at a leisurely pace.

Gáldar

Gáldar

On first view, there doesn't seem to be anything particularly remarkable about Gáldar in the north of the island. Then you realize the town's built on a, admittedly dormant, volcano with nonetheless brave souls living towards the top. Don't leave without visiting Gran Canaria's most entertaining museum/archaeological park, the Cueva Pintada.

Guía

Guía

South side GC-2, combine a trip to Guía with a visit to neighbouring Gáldar. Forget having a relaxing café con leche in Madrid's Plaza Mayor, Santa María de Guía's Plaza Grande's altogether more chilled. Although rarely chilly, what with Gran Canaria being a totally tropical island and all.

Ingenio

Ingenio

All that separates Ingenio from Agüimes is the Barranco de Guayadeque. It's well worth negotiating the urban sprawl surrounding Ingenio to discover the treasure within. For Ingenio's centre rivals its neighbour's in terms of photo opportunities.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Pueblo Canario

Enjoy some capital fun in the city of palms. Whether it be a free show of traditional Canarian dancing at the Pueblo Canario or soaking up the sun on Las Canteras beach. And, on the odd day it's raining, there are plenty of indoor attractions available.

Tejeda

Tejeda

Like nearby Artenara, you'll feel like you've earned the privilege to take it easy in Tejeda following your drive there. Although not quite reaching the altitude of Artenara, Tejeda enjoys views which are almost as spectacular. It's like one giant mirador, really.

Telde

Iglesia de San Juan Bautista

Often referred to as Gran Canaria's second city, there's some debate whether Telde is, in fact, a metropolis. For a start, it can't boast a cathedral like capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria can. Although it's Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is certainly eye-catching.

Teror

Teror

If cobbled streets are you thing, Teror rivals Las Palmas de Gran Canaria's Vegueta in terms of olde-worlde feel. Sunday's market day and the town fills up with day-trippers from near and far. Other days of the week attract fewer visitors, giving the impression you've got Teror all for yourself.
