Puerto de Mogan

Puerto de Mogan is situated on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands. Some claim the picturesque resort to have the best climate in the world, add a blue flag beach, traditional charm and excellent local cuisine, and you have this excellent all year round holiday resort.

About town
Puerto de Mogan combines upmarket comfort with traditional fishing village charm. It suits holidaymakers looking for a more relaxed and elegant atmosphere. There is a delightful old fishing port, as well as a more modern leisure yacht marina. Around the port area visitors will find an ample selection of shops, bars and some fine seafood restaurants.

The town itself has been likened to a ‘Little Venice’, or as it is known “Venice of he Canaries”, with its network of canals and bridges that link the roads through the town. There are ample amenities including shops, banks, hairdressers, souvenir shops, etc. Mondays and Fridays are market days in Puerto de Mogan; but there is also lots of opportunity to visit the shops and towns all along the coastline. There is a frequent bus service that will take you on a route along the coast.

Puerto de Mogan is a delightful place to stroll around, taking in the roof terraces and gardens bursting with colour and fragrance from the heavenly flower and plant species that are tended so lovingly. The narrow, cobbled streets of the old village, lead up to steps carved out of the cliffs.

Puerto de Mogan beach
The beach at Puerto de Mogan is encompassed within a secluded bay, making for calm seas and safe swimming. Ideal for children. The sand itself was actually imported from the Sahara, and is golden in colour and very clean.

There are lots of facilities for beach lovers, including: sun beds, parasols, pedaloes and canoes for hire. Quaint little fishing huts line the back of the beach, which meets with a charming promenade, perfect for an early evening stroll before you head to the port for a delicious seafood supper.

Eating out
The fishing port of Puerto de Mogan understandably offers an excellent menu of seafood. You can enjoy the local catch of the day, whilst watching the fishing boats coming in from a day’s hard work.

There are also lots of opportunity to try typical Spanish and Canarian food, but you can also head to one of the many international restaurants that serve English, German, Chinese and Pizza options.

There are a few bars in town where you can enjoy a drink and live music. During the summer Jazz concerts are held at the bandstand by the new marina.

Places to visit
Aside from visiting the neighbouring towns and beaches, there are also lots of water-based activities, which will take you out into the Atlantic Ocean. The local diving centre offers PADI courses, plus you can hire jet skis, go paragliding, or take a trip out with the experts to do some sport-fishing.

Climate
Gran Canarias’s climate like the rest of the Canary Islands is mild, enjoying pleasant temperatures all year round. Average temperatures during the summer months average 26-28C; during the winter months the temperature rarely drops below 22 degrees, making it a perfect all year round destination. It has been said that Puerto de Mogan enjoys the best climate in the world.

City review

Look down! Bad points. The old village is like "dog shit alley" as they all let little dogs out and do not clean up after them. There are cigarette ends and rubbish everywhere. Very hard to park unless you want to use the underground carpark. Good points. The beach, the beautiful Little Venice area, the view from the Mirador, great value food at the Chinese Buffet and the far end restaurant on the beach. Fantastic seafood and views at the Lighthouse restaurant. Very helpful staff at Hyperdino supermarket and home delivery from Hyperdino and Spar. Theresa, the Estate Agent at Cardenas Immobilaria. She is very clever, seems able to speak in about seven languages, is very kind and helpful and really knows her area. If you want to buy an apartment in this part of Gran Canaria go and see Theresa. We met her at Christmas, returned at Easter, and are moving in in June. Thank you Theresa!
