History of Calahonda

Calahonda first appeared as a resort in 1963.

The urbanization is essentially the result of a merging of two large estates. One of which, was owned by the Van Dulken brothers, some two hundred and eight hectares and the other was owned by the Orbaneja family.

The Orbaneja family,  Jose, Fernando and Carmen Desvalls, were recognized construction experts having previously developed land in and around Tarragona. They arrived during the height of the building boom and saw the development potential along the coast.

Taking no time in purchasing the land from the Val Dulken brothers, they quickly began to develop Calahonda into the town it is today.

Indeed, Don Jose de Orbaneja is widely recognized as the founder of modern day Calahonda.

Including the ‘Best Spanish Urbanisation Award,’  in 2001-2002 and a Barclay’s bank award for being the best development on the Costa del Sol.
