Statuesque Spain

February 24th, 2013 by vernon

Spain is jam packed full of statues. You must have noticed them when you go walkabout on your holiday in the country. You cannot walk far in a city or town without passing several statues. While they get sat upon (and something else upon) by birds; surely they must represent points of interest to all of us.

Horses for Courses

January 26th, 2013 by vernon

vernon
Lots of people visit Spain to go horse riding. And it is indeed a splendid way to see the countryside. Man and thoroughbred beast united amid stunning scenery and dramatic landscape. And for those who are at one with horse flesh, there is lots to make you want to keep coming back on holiday to Spain. If you have always thought about going riding, but never got around to doing so, I cannot think of a better country in which to saddle up for the first time than Spain.

Breakfast in Spain!

January 15th, 2013 by Carol Byrne

Carol Byrne
What did you have for breakfast? Was it cold outside, the weather shows a blanket of snow for most of the UK today, brrrr.  Perhaps you had a bowl of steaming porridge, or a traditional full English – or Irish! – breakfast. If you are waking up to bright blue sky then you must be on a Spanish holiday - lucky you!  The Winter here has been the mildest in years, and Spain has been enjoying long sunny days and blue skies.  The Spanish like to eat out for breakfast – and you can do the same on that Winter break that you are just about to book! Let me tempt you….

Bridge over untroubled water

September 27th, 2012 by vernon

I was in the great city of Granada the other night – possibly the last truly hot night of the year. The temperature was twenty seven celsius at 9pm. But it was something that I have taken for granted that made me get all hot under the collar. That was how wonderful the bridges over the rivers are went lit up at night. So often i walk or drive across the bridges of Spain without fully appreciating their appearance. Here are just a few I have crossed that have grabbed my attention.

Golf in Spain – the ‘hole’ truth

September 2nd, 2012 by vernon

vernon
Men who are into golf will be watching the Ryder Cup with the passion they reserve for this annual event. In 1997 Spain became the first country in continental Europe to stage the event. Year after year men who love to play golf board aircraft to show off their green skills at golf courses all over Spain. With the sheer quantity of golf facilities on offer in the country, you could be forgiven for thinking Spain invented the game.

Spain on a plate

July 29th, 2012 by vernon

Taste is one of the five recognised senses. And what better way to sample the flavours of Spain than to taste the place via its food and drink. And that is just for starters. That’s what cookery book author Claudia Roden spent several years doing as research for her new, sumptuous book called ‘The Food of Spain.’ I can think of less tasty ways to savour all a country like Spain has to offer.

A night out watching a Flamenco performance is often the highlight of your special Spanish Holiday.  Particularly when performed on a balmy night in one of the Gypsy barrios of Seville or Granada.  But it´s not just about the music…take in the colourful swish of  red clothing and the use of the Abanico or Spanish fan.  Watch as the mysterious dancer entrances you with clacking heels, a turn of her wrist and a sweep of the shawl…even clothing has its own language and every movement a secret signal or code. What is the history of the Spanish shawl?  Where did it come from?  Let´s find out…

We all take photographs as we travel around Spain. Whether we are on holiday in the wonderful country, or living and working in Spain. If in the area, one of the most spectacular views, is from the sea cliffs just outside of the village of Barbate, on the Costa de la Luz. On a clear day the views are spectacular, with the mountains of Morocco and the surrounding beaches providing a breathtaking backdrop.

All at sea in Spain

May 7th, 2012 by vernon

vernon
So the sea is the sea. Is that correct? After all, the sea is blue. You can swim in it, sail on it, fly over the top of it. Ideally the waves arrive on a sandy beach in Spain. That would be the Mediterranean then, would it? Well, yes. And no. It depends where you are. You may be marvelling at the Med. Or you may be admiring the Atlantic. But which is it?

So the gifts have been unwrapped and the turkey has been decimated – if you look at another leftover turkey sandwich or liqueur chocolate or watch another re run of The Wizard of Oz you´ll scream…. Costa de la Luz is often associated with the rich tuna fish dishes from the area.
