The temperature is rising steadily in Southern Spain.  The air is getting a little balmier by the day and Spring is well underway. For most that means an early Spanish holiday, a time for relaxing and recharging, a time to start the Summer with a smile and an early suntan.  May for most of Spain means the start of the fiesta season, so let´s kick off  the party with the floral Festival of the Crosses...

November 28th, 2011 by Carol Byrne

Central Spain is often overlooked. It´s too easy to just stick to exploring the wonderful costas, with miles of sandy beaches and endless recreation.  Inland Spain to most means one of either two places, Madrid or Barcelona – the two big attractions for city breaks – and why not? But sometimes inland Spain can be fascinating and Extramadura is no exception. Nature lovers, walkers and just a longing to get off the beaten track is a call too strong to ignore, so come on , explore a little of Extramadura!

As you peel that Valencian Orange and bite into the juicy segments, or tuck into a delicious Paella whilst on holiday at the local fiesta – you may be forgiven for imagining the Spain you see is all about Sun, Sea and Sangria…. but a thriving agricultural layer survives here too – and it´s not just about the rice and the oranges! -  although they are an important part of the fabric of Spain too… Hop into your wellies and Barbour jacket, and let´s look at the farming patterns of Spain…

August 26th, 2011 by Carol Byrne

Or perhaps marvellous monuments, and you will indeed marvel as Mérida is just full of them.  The province of Badajoz, in Extremadura, in the west centre of Spain, is home to this city which was founded by the Romans in 23 BC.  It is said that no other place in Spain can offer more in the way of surviving monuments, indeed many of those quarried have been ‘recycled’ and reused in the Mezquita of Cordoba…So come roaming around the UNESCO site of Roman Mérida and discover this well preserved lady of a city…

Rock festivals are made all the sweeter with the addition of a little sunshine, just one good reason to visit the historic and romantic city of Cáceres, the provincial capital of Extramadura. Declared a world heritage site by UNESCO since 1986, come for the music, stay for the medieval sights and lofty towers, you’ll be glad you did!

Road Trip around Spain: Part 3 Caceres, Extremadura

October 5th, 2010 by Louise Juhlin

Louise Juhlin
Heading out of Seville we didn’t have much choice but to drive north on the A66 taking us to Caceres. As I stated earlier when we do these roads trips our priority is always to take secondary roads. It always leads to different experiences. Whether it’s different landscapes, unique towns or meeting people, there is always something interesting that comes out of it. I don’t know what happened this year, but every time we ended up in a little remote place and I needed to ask for directions there was ALWAYS something… Either they couldn’t hear, couldn’t see, gave me such wrong directions that I ended up driving on a pedrastian shopping street in the middle of a city (!), or they were just plain out crazy! (My poor Seat Ibiza got screamed and punched at because we asked for directions..)
