The enormous area of Andalucía that covers Southern Spain is home to acres and acres given over to Natural Parkland – an abundance of preserved areas that act as a haven for wildlife, plant-life and home to geological formations and spectacular peaks. The Spanish weather is nearly always guaranteed to please on your holiday, and where better to take the kids exploring on a free day out, and get a little exercise into the bargain?

 Pack your map, binoculars and compass, let’s go explore Andalucía!

Watching birds go by

I confess I’ve always liked birdwatching. But not the type that requires me to carry a pair of binoculars. Most of mine has been undertaken while sat in the sunshine with a beer in my hand. And there’s never been a feather in sight! But I do like spotting the birds with beaks as they fly overhead. But to be a serious bird spotter in Spain requires time and patience. I have neither, sadly. But I know people who do. They are the lucky ones. They enjoy what is one of the least talked about highlights of living or holidaying in Spain.

Spains UNESCO World Heritage Sites

There are numerous reasons to travel to Spain. The appealing beaches with crystal-clear waters along the Mediterranean are high on the list, but there are many cultural places of interest that shouldn’t be missed. Spain comes second on the list of countries with the most sites declared of cultural and natural importance by UNESCO.  With 42 World Heritage Sites around the country there are at least 42 reasons to travel to Spain.

A National Geographic documentary, ‘Finding Atlantis,’ that was aired over the weekend and will be next shown on March 20th, puts forward evidence that the lost city of Atlantis is to be found in Southern Spain. Using the latest sonar technology, satellite photography and earth penetrating radar, scientists are fairly confident that the remains of Atlantis are to be found buried in Doñana National Park, in the province of Huelva.

New ferry service between Huelva and Las Palmas

A new ferry service between Huelva and Las Palmas in the Canaries is due to start in March of this year. The crossing will take 28 hours. Tickets are due to go on sale in a few weeks time and are available over the internet. A single one way ticket is to cost 90€ while a VIP cabin is to be around 200€. The service will be running weekly, leaving Huelva every Saturday morning.

A new ‘British route’ to be opened in Huelva

The PP party – Partido Popular - is proposing to open a new ‘British route,’ in the Province of Huelva. The route is aimed at promoting mining areas in the area. Areas that are not on the traditional tourist map. The Rio Tinto mines are said to be the oldest in the World. They were sold to the British by the Spanish government in the 19th Century. A purpose built town, Bella Vista, is on the proposed route and sits just a few kilometres from the Rio Tinto mines. The route is to run from Rio Tinto to Punta Umbría.
