Carol Byrne
Spain loves a party – and fiestas are synonymous with Spain.  Perhaps you’ve wandered into one by accident, that’s easy to do, there’s one on almost every day, somewhere in Spain!  You can book a holiday around a specific one, or just look one up when you get here.  One way or another, it’ll be a riot – of music, dancing, local gastronomy and drinking, usually with loud sound provided on cue with fireworks and bangers.  Yes, Spain ‘does’ LOUD very well too! But there are some really odd festivals too, some so strange you’ll think I am making this up – but, I assure you – it’s all true.  You might just have to come along and see some of these in order to quite believe them. Here are 5 of the strangest festivals in Spain.

Santiago de la Ribera, Murcia

March 10th, 2013 by Carol Byrne

Carol Byrne
If you came to Spain in the 1960′s, it would have probably been to lie on the beaches of the Costa del Sol, and eat familiar food in a hotel, as part of a package holiday, the same holiday boom that pushed Spain out on the boat of tourism, where it has sailed ever since, and become one of the biggest ships of the industry today.  These days, more than just Málaga are open for discovery, and Spain has welcomed the world with open arms, and many different destinations.  Former fishing villages are transformed into upmarket resorts up and down the coastline of  sunny Spain, let’s visit one of them – Santiago de la Ribera, in the province of Murcia.

Quick trips to Spain – In and around Murcia

January 22nd, 2013 by Carol Byrne

Carol Byrne
Sometimes, there is just time for a flying visit, a quick trip to recharge the batteries and top up on rejuvenation levels.  Many people are fans of the quick trip, several small long weekends in the year can sometimes be more beneficial than taking the full fortnight at one time.  It gives one more to look forward to as well, and breaks up the monotony of the working year.  Lots more to see too, and if you love Spain,  then see more of it in 2013 – the country is so varying in culture, food, sights, climate, people and their customs – and you don’t have to be an anthropologist to appreciate it! Let’s take some quick trips around Spain – starting with Murcia.

I will drive.

What? October already!  Who would believe it’s only 84 days to Christmas…..? Okay, okay, I’ll shut up! What’s on in October,? Well, lots of course, this is the home of the Fiesta, hot on the heels of the Emmy Awards last week, for film buffs an extra treat is in store as October brings a month Film Festivals to enjoy, put on the popcorn, sit down, and let me show you the programme of events…

Men who are into golf will be watching the Ryder Cup with the passion they reserve for this annual event. In 1997 Spain became the first country in continental Europe to stage the event. Year after year men who love to play golf board aircraft to show off their green skills at golf courses all over Spain. With the sheer quantity of golf facilities on offer in the country, you could be forgiven for thinking Spain invented the game.

Those taking a holiday in Spain can be a little bewildered when it comes to eating out in the country. What should they have for breakfast? When is lunch served? And why, oh why, do they have to wait so late to eat dinner. Or, for some, supper! The whole what to and when to aspect to life in Spain. It takes some getting used to. April 16th, 2012 by Carol Byrne

Carol Byrne
The Costa Calida – or the warm coast – is just what you need for a few days away under the rays of the Spanish sunshine – a sheltered coast and warm waters of the blue sea splashing about in the Mar Menor - literally the little sea. Shallow and sheltered means a lagoon always like a warm bath, separated from the cooler Mediterranean by a narrow strip of coastline known as La Manga – the sleeve!  Come and discover the many attractions of this part of Murcia

Bus stop – La Alpujarra

April 8th, 2012 by vernon

vernon
The public transport service in Spain is excellent. So much of the attention is always on the high speed train service that now covers so much of the country and allows you to travel between the major cities at high speed. But what if you want to see the country outside your window? Some trains go so fast it is difficult to take in the scenery. I catch the bus. I think the superb coach network is a great way to see Spain.

Going Inland – Caravaca de la Cruz

April 1st, 2012 by vernon

vernon
You may have gathered by now that i love inland Spain. I cannot recall when i last sat on a beach, but i do remember being bored within ten minutes. Or was it five? Each to their own and all that, but I would much rather be motoring around Spain, or using the excellent public transport available in the country, in order to discover new destinations that are ideal for a holiday or simply a day out.
