A day in the life of… Almuñécar
February 27th, 2013 by vernon
Many a popular Spanish town or city has its special day of the week.
The day when more people visit the place than on any other day of the week. It is often market day. And, at all times of the year, that day in Almuñécar is Friday.

A fiesta of crumbs? Not so meagre Migas
November 20th, 2012 by Carol Byrne
You might be forgiven for thinking that Migas is a Spanish holiday destination. It’s not, in fact it’s a traditional dish served here in Spain and eaten with gusto….as a little saucer of tapas, as a full meal, at fiestas, and never more so that the Festival of Migas in the equally traditional pueblo of Torrox, not a million miles from the ever popular Costa del Sol!
Never tried Migas? Pass your plate over then, allow me to introduce you…

Getting to know Nerja
July 27th, 2012 by vernon
You can think you know a place in Spain, but later discover you didn’t really know it at all.
I have known of Nerja for several years. Maybe i have been there only twice a year for the past ten years.
But i did not truly get to know Nerja until much more recently. When i spent three days there in the space of one week. And, more and more, i liked what i saw.

My first visit to… the caves of Nerja
July 20th, 2012 by vernon
How can i have been travelling Spain for ten years, and living within an hour of Nerja for seven, without having visited the famous caves there? It is a mystery to me also.
But, at last, i went there yesterday. One of many ‘first time’ visits i shall be writing about. Passing on my experience of tourist attractions. Both the famous ones, and those less well known.
And i have to write about about this one immediately. For i was very impressed.

Eat Spain
May 2nd, 2012 by vernon
Those taking a holiday in Spain can be a little bewildered when it comes to eating out in the country. What should they have for breakfast? When is lunch served? And why, oh why, do they have to wait so late to eat dinner. Or, for some, supper!
The whole what to and when to aspect to life in Spain. It takes some getting used to. Especially if you are in the country for only a short time.

Bus Stop – to the beach
April 10th, 2012 by vernon
When Spanish families go to the beach they tend to take the entire contents of their house with them. Everything except the kitchen sink.
That is because they go there in the comfort of their air conditioned car. But what if you want to see Spain by bus? As i sometimes do.
Well you can take plenty of stuff with you on a Spanish bus. Though taking a fold out dining table for twelve people may be stretching your luck.
Here are the coastlines I have seen by bus.

A visit to El Acebuchal – the lost village
March 14th, 2012 by John Kramer
There are various names associated with the village of El Acebuchal – “the Lost Village,” and “the Ghost Village – el Pueblo Fantasma,” are the two that seem to be most commonly used. The hamlet (aldea) /village of Acebuchal has a history. Not a particularly nice one. But a history all the same.
Today, Acebuchal is an exceptionally beautiful village situated right in the heart of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Almara Natural Park. It sits almost on the border between Frigiliana and Competa.
If staying in the area you couldn’t hope for a better day trip. Spectacular scenery, great food and village that is, most definitely, ‘lost’ in time.

Going Underground
January 3rd, 2012 by vernon
For my sins, I have lived in a town in England that showed me first hand what life must have been like when cavemen ruled the planet.
The name of that town will remain a secret, in order to protect the innocent. Suffice to say that I know what it is like to live among trogolodytes. Albeit the modern day version.
And yet, in and around that mystery town, I never saw a cave. I never did find out where such outdated men lived.
In Spain, meanwhile, I have seen many caves – but not a cavemen in sight.

The best beach in Nerja on the Costa del Sol
October 17th, 2011 by John Kramer
Alberquillas Beach, or Playa de las Alberquillas is only situated some ten kilometers from the center of Nerja. It feels, however, to be a World away from the more popular beaches nearer the town.
Playa de las Alberquillas is one of those places that never gets too busy, even in the height of summer.
For those looking to enjoy a beautiful beach with some peace and tranquillity, Playa de las Alberquillas is highly recommended.

Culinary Spain – the north south divide
September 28th, 2011 by vernon
A British made television series that saw the chef Rick Stein travel around Spain has revitalised interest in Spanish food. An enthusiastic Stein was on a voyage of discovery, trying to see if Spanish food had improved since he first ate in the country as a child. He decided it has come on in leaps and bounds. And he’s not wrong.
I’ve been known to set off on my own culinary tour of Spain and I have been fortunate enough to taste some of the best food on offer in the country.
And unlucky enough to eat some of the worst.

Mary Anne Goossens, 49, the Dutch tourist that went missing in the Nerja area 18 days ago, has been found alive and well. As more details of her miraculous escape emerge, it almost reads as the script for an upcoming Hollywood Blockbuster.

A family walk up the Rio Chillar, Nerja, Costa del Sol
June 13th, 2011 by John Kramer
Another great family day out for anyone looking to get away from the beach for a day, is to walk up the Rio Chillar in Nerja, on the Costa del Sol.
It is one of the few walks that is possible during the height of the Andalucian summer. Indeed, walking through the river is one of the best ways to cool off on a hot summer’s day.

Near Nerja, discover Frigiliana!
May 14th, 2011 by Carol Byrne
Mooching down the coast from Malaga, you will surely stop at Nerja, with it’s wonderful viewpoint from the Balcon de Europa, bustling streets, go shopping and discover the many cafés and restaurants and perhaps a visit to the caves. But for a week or longer, I recommend the whitewashed village of Frigiliana, perched up high in the mountains, yet still only 15 minutes from the glorious beaches of Nerja.
