Star gazing in Spain

December 22nd, 2011 by John Kramer

John Kramer
The night skies that our ancestors have taken for granted for millions of years are disappearing before our very eyes. According to the International Dark Sky association, a child born today in either Europe or the US has only a one in ten chance of witnessing  a truly dark sky. The thousands of stars that were once visible to the naked eye are now increasingly obscured by industrial light and pollution. Recent estimates from both sides of the Atlantic suggest that city dwellers will only get a glimpse of 500 stars at any one time. In undisturbed areas, the Milky Way should be clearly visible and with it over 15,000 stars. Under these optimum conditions you should expect to see over 30 meteors per hour.

Seeing Stars in Spain

August 18th, 2011 by vernon

For decades Spain has attracted big names from the world of literature, music, cinema, politics and sport. They have sought sun and seclusion. Success in showbiz or the arts has led many an author, musician, actor or footballer to buy a home in Spain. Many fell in love with the country and never returned to the UK. For others it provides a hideaway. A peaceful setting from which to get inspiration for the next record or book. A pool to sit by where you can read your lines for the next part in a Hollywood blockbuster. When so called ‘A listers’ move to Spain they hope it will go unnoticed by the press and the glossy magazines. But it never does. However, there are many people in the public eye who do manage to live some of the year in Spain and be largely anonymous.

The Canary Islands are the best choice to reach the heat without travelling to far. Many set course towards the islands during the colder season as it is the perfect choice to reach the sun in less than six hours and by avoiding jetlag. Within the Canary Islands one can find three islands that are less well known and a bit different, the perfect choice for those who want to avoid overcrowded beaches and instead enjoy a more relaxing holiday. These three islands, all situated to the west of Tenerife, offer beautiful scenery, fewer tourists and a more genuine experience.

Tenerife; Lunar Landscapes and White Sandy Beaches

Enjoy the pleasures of swimming and sunbathing on one of the many beaches around Tenerife while glancing up towards the spectacular snow tipped volcano El Teide. Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and the evident contrasts is more apparent than on any of the other islands. The south being famous for its long stretches of white sandy beaches, the north famous for its rocky coastline and stunning green nature, while the central part of the island is dominated by lunar like landscape which is the result from all the volcanic activity on the island.
