New markets for Malaga’s new port area – Muelle uno

Malaga’s new port area, known collectively as Piers one and two or (Muelle Uno y dos in Spanish) is turning into a hive of activity.
It has has been particularly popular during the summer months, with more and more Malaguenos making their way down to the port area to enjoy a quiet stroll along the sea front and to enjoy a drink or a bit to eat in one of the many bars/restaurants that line the walkway.
Slowly but surely its turning into the place to be in Malaga!

3.3% increase in Spain’s tourism numbers

According to figures just released today by Spain’s tourism ministry, 2012 is proving to be a great year for Spanish tourism.
Over 32,8 million international tourists arrived on Spanish shores in the first seven months of 2012. An increase of 3.3% over the same period last year.

The human body exhibition starts in Marbella

The World famous human body exhibition is getting ready to start in Marbella. Starting on June 15th and runs until September 15th.
Controversially using real body parts to show the inner workings of the human body, it is hoped to promote a healthier lifestyle among the attendees. Over 20 million people Worldwide have seen the exhibition.

The Iberian Lynx

The Iberian Lynx has recently been classified by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as the world’s most endangered feline species.
It is set to be the first cat species since the sabre toothed tiger to go extinct (which happened over 10,000 years ago)
Saving it is proving to be an authentic race against time.

Summer holidays in Spain are now cheaper than ever

A recent study by the Post Office Travel Money has confirmed that this year is a great year to travel.
Both the Euro crisis and the relative strength of the Pound Sterling are making travelling abroad ever more appealing. The Sterling has strengthened against 80% of the world’s currencies since the beginning of the year.
Some of the most marked changes have been against the Euro.

Barcelona to build huge indoor ski run by 2015

Recent articles in the Guardian and the French newspaper Le Monde have stated that Barcelona is set to build a huge indoor snow centre. It is due to be completed in 2015. The entire structure is going to be carbon neutral.
Despite being situated under two hours away from ski resorts in the Pyrenees, this new centre promises to be one of kind. People can swim in the Mediterranean and ski, all within the same city.

A new era – the UK’s jet-setting toddlers

A recent survey has clearly demonstrated our changing travelling patterns.
Children of today will have been abroad four times by the time they reach ten.
Thirty years ago, 65% of children had never travelled by the age of ten and if they had, the most probable destination was a local seaside town.
The most visited family holiday destination was Cornwall…..now, its, you guessed it, sunny SPAIN.

2011 – third best year on record for tourism figures

2011 is set to be, the third best year in history, for Spanish tourism figures.
According to recent reports, 54 million tourists have visited Spain so far this year. This number is set to increase to 57 million, by year-end. A 7.7% increase on the figures for 2010.
2007 is still the best year on record, with 59.2 million travellers and is closely followed by tourism figures from 2006, when 58.4 million people visited Spain.

Spanish building wins World Building of the Year 2011 Award

The Media-TIC building in Barcelona has won one of the most prestigious architectural awards in the World – it was crowned the World Building of the Year 2011 by the WAF (World Architecture Festival Awards).
The competition was fierce with over 700 submissions from 59 countries.

All vehicles in Spain to be colour-coded according to pollution

In a motion that was just passed by the Spanish Cabinet last Friday all cars in Spain are to be coloured-coded and assigned a number according to the amount of pollution they emit.
The colours range from green to red and the numbers 1 to 4. Cities across Spain can then be ‘closed’ to the more polluting of vehicles.
Number 1 is for the most polluting cars or those registered before 1992. 4 is reserved for electric, hybrid and gas cars. Red is to be assigned to the more polluting vehicles.

Four days of walking in Marbella

Thousands of visitors from all over the World are expected to be attending the ‘Four days of walking Marbella event’ – that is taking place from the 9th until the 12th of October.
The hikers are due to walk some 20km a day for the four days. Those who complete the 80kms will receive a ‘walking medal.’
This is the first year that the event is taking place in Spain and it is generating quite a buzz.

Experian Hitwise – the recognised leader in online intelligence – has just published its quarterly travel report – it reveals another fantastic quarter for Spanish holiday destinations.
Four of the top ten most searched destinations are in Spain. Tenerife, Malaga, Alicante and Barcelona were the most sought after destinations.

Google maps with live traffic reports now in Spain

Google has announced that thirteen European countries will have the live traffic reports included within the Google maps interface. Just in time for the summer holidays, Spain is the first country to have the interface live.
In addition to Spain, the traffic reports are going to be available in the following countries over the next few days; Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland and the UK.
Previously only available in the US. The live traffic reports were introduced in 2008 and have proved to be a resounding success.

Dutch tourist found alive and well

Mary Anne Goossens, 49, the Dutch tourist that went missing in the Nerja area 18 days ago, has been found alive and well. As more details of her miraculous escape emerge, it almost reads as the script for an upcoming Hollywood Blockbuster.

Sierra de Tramuntana Majorca declared a World Heritage Site

Following a meeting of UNESCO officials in Paris last week. It has been announced that the Natural Park of Sierra de Tramuntana (Tramontana) on the Island of Mallorca is to be added to the prestigious list of World Heritage sites.
Spain now has the second most World Heritage sites in the World with a total 44. Italy is in first place with 47 sites.

Self-catering holidays in Spain provide best value for money

A new study carried out by the Post Office, ‘Self-catering on a shoestring report,’ has concluded that Spain provides the best value for money when compared to thirteen other popular destinations.
The study compared the prices of 16 common supermarket purchases, such as milk, bread, fruit and various other staples across 13 of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations.

Blue is the colour…

Or at least it is in the normally whitewashed village of Juzcar in Andalusia, which has been catapulted to fame by Sony, who have chosen the village as the venue to host the world premiere of the new Smurf movie, The Smurfs 3D, which takes places tonight, June 16th. The movie will premiere in Spain on August 15th.

Hottest April in Spain for the last 60 years

The Spanish Meteorological Agency, AEMET, has just published a report showing that Spain has just experienced the hottest April since records began in 1951.
Temperatures were an average of 3.9C hotter than normal. Some areas, mostly in the Northern and Central Spain, experienced average temperatures 5C above the norm.
