Organic food production in Andalucia is experiencing nothing short of a boom. What was considered by many to be a minor/short-term surge in demand for organic produce in Northern Europe is now also being fuelled by an ever increasing local demand for organic produce.

Andalucia – Europe’s organic nerve centre

Spain is the largest producer of organic food in Europe having overtaken Italy in 2010. Over 65% of all organic food in Spain is grown in Andalucia.

In the Province of Malaga alone, organic farming has almost tripled over the last decade.

In 2001, there were 12,291 hectares of land dedicated to organic food production – without any form of pesticides – today there are over 32,822. Considering how mountainous the Province of Malaga is, this is no small feat.

Unsurprisingly the largest organic farms are to be found in Huelva, with over 200,000 hectares and in Sevilla with over 120,000 hectares dedicated to organic produce.

Ecological/organic food markets in Malaga

Something that has taken many by surprise is the recent surge in local demand for organic foodstuffs.

Bit-by-bit, people are realising the health benefits associated with organic food and they are also coming to terms with the fact that organic produce need not be a lot more expensive than normal produce.

One thing Malaga has seen over the last few months is a growth in organic food markets.

Last Sunday saw the first organic food market in the Mijas/Fuengirola area. There seem to be a lot of new ventures planned and they are proving to be very popular.

Unless otherwise stated all the markets take place in the morning – from early until around 1400hrs.
