Almunecar, on the Costa Tropical, is set to have Spain’s first seven-star hotel. The 230 million euro project has been given the final go-ahead and is expected to be complete in 2013. Work is due to start in eight months. It is thought that over 600 jobs will be created as direct result.

Representatives of the hotel operator, Banyan Tree Holdings, the Danish Ambassador to Spain, Lars Thuesen and the mayor of Almunecar, Juan Carlos Benavides attended the unveiling ceremony last weekend.

Costa Tropical

"Almunecar"One of only a handful of seven-stared hotels in Europe, it is hoped that the hotel will further open up the area to tourism. Almunecar is the capital of the Costa Tropical.

The whole of the Costa Tropical has become far more accessible in the last few years. The new motorway, international airports in Malaga, Granada and Almeria have all helped open the area up.

Far less developed than it’s Easterly neighbour, the Costa Tropical is characterised by its sub-tropical climate and rugged landscape. Literally squashed between the warm Mediterranean and the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains.

Spectacular coastline

This spectacular scenery, with mountains literally plunging into the sea, has given the Costa Tropical some of Spain’s prettiest coastline.
Characterised by secluded coves and small, hidden beaches, most of the coastline has been granted National Park status, further adding to it’s beauty and conservation.
