In Spain the autumn leaves fall earlier than they do in northern Europe. It is every bit as lovely in Spain at that time of the year. The hot summer suns have gone, but the sky is still a beautiful shade of blue. There is a breeze in the air and – best of all – the beaches are much quieter than they were in August. The months of September and October offer visitors a taste of some of the nicest weeks in Spain.

You can think you know a place in Spain, but later discover you didn’t really know it at all. I have known of Nerja for several years. Maybe i have been there only twice a year for the past ten years. But i did not truly get to know Nerja until much more recently. When i spent three days there in the space of one week. I love the fact that I don’t pay for bottled water in Spain. I just fill up at the natural springs and drink what is, at many times of the year, snow melt. Everyone has their favourites, here are five of mine.

You want to look upon clear turquoise waters, whatever the weather. Why not try lake living? I undertook a road trip that took in just a handful of the many lakes in Spain. Those staying or living near a lake were very positive about the benefits of lake living. Even when the blue waters were shrouded in fog or low cloud, I could see what they were talking about. The lakes of Spain remind me of autumn mornings in the English Lake District. And here is why.

Alhama de Granada, Andalucia

Alhama de Granada is situated approximately 50km from Granada. The name Alhama is derived from the the Arabic – al-hammam - meaning thermal baths. Ever since Roman times, the healing properties of the thermal water from Alhama have been recognised and sought after. During the period of the reconquest, Christians paid huge sums of money to take the water here. Alhama de Granada is a place that has inspired poets, and travellers alike throughout the centuries. The romantic traveller Teofilo Gautier summed up the city’s existence as ‘hanging on an enormous rock or peak like an eagle’s nest’. Little has changed over the years. Alhama stills retains its traditional charm and has a very North African feel to it.
