A day in the life of… Almuñécar
February 27th, 2013 by vernon
Many a popular Spanish town or city has its special day of the week.
The day when more people visit the place than on any other day of the week. It is often market day. And, at all times of the year, that day in Almuñécar is Friday.

February 5th, 2013 by Carol Byrne
The sky is azure blue, the birds are singing, daytime temperatures are climbing and the Almond is in full fluffy blossom. Wait a minute, it’s still only February, right? Right. And this is Spain. Even up here at altitude in the Alpujarras mountains the day’s heat will fool you completely into thinking that you have been transported straight to late Spring.
So, make the most of your self catering holiday, think al fresco, pack a picnic and a blanket, and head for the hills!

Breakfast in Spain!
January 15th, 2013 by Carol Byrne
What did you have for breakfast? Was it cold outside, the weather shows a blanket of snow for most of the UK today, brrrr. Perhaps you had a bowl of steaming porridge, or a traditional full English – or Irish! – breakfast.
If you are waking up to bright blue sky then you must be on a Spanish holiday - lucky you! The Winter here has been the mildest in years, and Spain has been enjoying long sunny days and blue skies. The Spanish like to eat out for breakfast – and you can do the same on that Winter break that you are just about to book! Let me tempt you….

Warm winter locations in Spain
December 31st, 2012 by vernon
Not everywhere in Spain is warm in winter. Contrary to popular mythology, some places are actually cold in deepest winter.
But there are several places to go where winter warmth is on offer every year. Some obvious locations, others more surprising.
Here are some suggestions where to go to chill out, but not be chilly.

Time to wine in Spain
October 25th, 2012 by vernon
Grapes are all around me. A friend cannot give me enough. A neighbour has land where I am encouraged to take as many grapes as I wish.
If things carry on this way I will soon be running my own bodega. But there is no need to. There are plenty for you and me to visit throughout Spain.
So let’s go on a road trip. You can drink. I will drive.

Christmas time in Spain
October 17th, 2012 by vernon
One of the first things that attracted me to Spain was that, when I first set about living here, the country didn’t ‘do’ Christmas.
I recall being in Supermarkets in December and there was not a sign of Santa. No teasing with tinsel. No silly Christmas songs being played in any language.
For this long lost relation of Scrooge, that was bliss.

Wine flows freely in Cádiar
October 5th, 2012 by Carol Byrne
A wine fiesta in October where the red stuff flows from the fountains in place of wine? Now that sounds like a party! Come and join in the fun in the Alpujarras this weekend at the Cádiar Feria de Octubre...There’s more than wine afoot – but it does take pride of place so come along and mingle…

A snapshot of Salobreña
September 13th, 2012 by vernon
It is quite rare for a coastal location to offer the usual suspects of sea and sand along with top quality shops and a castle.
You might get two of the three, but rarely the hat trick.
Salobreña on the Costa Tropical delivers the goods.

Any Port in Spain
September 11th, 2012 by vernon
How you arrive at your destination in Spain can make all the difference to your first impressions of the country. Flying is so much less attractive than it was in times gone past. It feels less special than it used to.
But arriving in a country by sea still has some inherent magic to it. Including when you arrive at one of the many Spanish ports.

Golf in Spain – the ‘hole’ truth
September 2nd, 2012 by vernon
Men who are into golf will be watching the Ryder Cup with the passion they reserve for this annual event. In 1997 Spain became the first country in continental Europe to stage the event.
Year after year men who love to play golf board aircraft to show off their green skills at golf courses all over Spain.
With the sheer quantity of golf facilities on offer in the country, you could be forgiven for thinking Spain invented the game.

Sea View Spain
August 31st, 2012 by vernon
I once met an estate agent in Spain who told me that a sea view was overrated.
He had an alternative take on the benefits of a view of the Mediterranean or Atlantic oceans.
“People buying a house with a sea view soon get bored of it. Within months they take it for granted. After all, not much happens. Once in a while you see a boat and get excited, and that’s it. Until the next boat. Really, in truth, it’s just heaps of water.”
Well this inland living boy was on the coast the other day, admiring the sea view from the house of friends. And I for one was transfixed.

Every Picture Tells a Story in Spain
August 29th, 2012 by vernon
Should i ever get a spare few months, i will sort out the multitude of photographs i have taken during ten years of travelling Spain. I envy those who have their pictures organised and neatly categorized.
When trawling through my thousands of photos it is more a case of lucky dip. But all bring back memories of life in Spain. But, just maybe, not as you know it.

Four seasons in Granada – Winter
August 20th, 2012 by vernon
When the skies are bright, there is a crisp feeling in the air and the sunshine is warm enough to sit out in for a few hours during the day. That means winter and you are in Granada.
Snow, plenty of it, looks down on the city centre from its place on the imperious Sierra Nevada mountains.
I love Granada in Winter.

Four Seasons in Granada – Autumn
August 16th, 2012 by vernon
In Spain the autumn leaves fall earlier than they do in northern Europe. It is every bit as lovely in Spain at that time of the year.
The hot summer suns have gone, but the sky is still a beautiful shade of blue. There is a breeze in the air and – best of all – the beaches are much quieter than they were in August.
The months of September and October offer visitors a taste of some of the nicest weeks in Spain.

Four seasons in Granada – Summer in the city
August 14th, 2012 by vernon
When asked if they would like to live in Spain, I have heard some holidaymakers say: “No, I would miss the four seasons.”
Now i presume they were talking about the weather, and not the superb band once led by Frankie Valli.
I get four seasons in Spain. Sometimes in one day.
But, more usually, in one year. And here is where i go when they arrive. All within the province of Granada.

Touchy, feely Spain
August 2nd, 2012 by vernon
Do not touch! Three words that drive me crazy. They turn up in the most inappropriate places these days.
No such problems in Spain. So much in the country begs you to touch it. Thank heavens for that, say I.
Having explored the sights, smells and sounds of Spain; it is now time to get all touchy feely.

Shhh…A secret shared. Musical Murtas in the Alpujarras
July 31st, 2012 by Carol Byrne
Ever arrived somewhere for a holiday and just longed for somewhere a little more traditional, a tad more real?
Well, allow me to share with you my secret location, in fact my home for the past 6 years and some…you won’t find it in many guidebooks, and it’s not on the way to anywhere else!
But your first glimpse of Murtas on the Contraviesa will leave you spellbound, flat roofed Berber styled houses tumbling down a mountain higher than Ben Nevis, throwing open views right down to the Costa Tropical and the mountains of Morocco beyond, with a sweep behind to the snow capped Sierra Nevada and the impossibly pretty surrounding countryside.
Why here? Well, that’s hard to explain…..it’s a little like casting a fishing line, and once you’re reeled in….you’re hooked!
And next week the hills are alive… with the sound of music!
