Every picture tells a story in the province of Granada
January 23rd, 2013 by vernon
When you take a holiday in Spain you will go home with lots of photographs. Be they taken on a normal, proper camera. Or via your mobile telephone.
Some will be more memorable than others.
From my vast travels around the varied landscape of Spain, I am going to share some of mine with you. Beginning in the province of Granada, here are some of my favourites.

I spy in Spain
October 28th, 2012 by vernon
Parents will know all about those words they hear from the rear of the holiday hire car. Words guaranteed to send a chill down the spine of mummy or daddy.
Two words. What’s that?
An almost inevitable utterance from children who see something out of the car window. A sight they are not used to seeing when at home.
So, here are some answers to that annoying question. What is that?

Time to wine in Spain
October 25th, 2012 by vernon
Grapes are all around me. A friend cannot give me enough. A neighbour has land where I am encouraged to take as many grapes as I wish.
If things carry on this way I will soon be running my own bodega. But there is no need to. There are plenty for you and me to visit throughout Spain.
So let’s go on a road trip. You can drink. I will drive.

Animal magic in Spain
August 30th, 2012 by vernon
What do you notice when on holiday in Spain?
The people? The places you drive by? The beautiful beaches or magnificent monuments?
Probably all those. But i am always taken by how people on holiday here notice the animals of Spain. Indeed, i am as guilty as the next person for giving them a name. Why do we do that?
And my treasured photo album of Spain is full of the animals of Spain.

Every Picture Tells a Story in Spain
August 29th, 2012 by vernon
Should i ever get a spare few months, i will sort out the multitude of photographs i have taken during ten years of travelling Spain. I envy those who have their pictures organised and neatly categorized.
When trawling through my thousands of photos it is more a case of lucky dip. But all bring back memories of life in Spain. But, just maybe, not as you know it.

Four seasons in Granada – Spring
August 25th, 2012 by vernon
I have one complaint to make about the four seasons in Spain. I love spring. And it simply does not last long enough. It is my favourite time of the year but i feel the country is short changing me when it comes the the joys of spring.
I want it to last longer. Especially in Granada where winter departs and summer arrives without sufficient breathing space to enjoy the delights of spring.

Sounding out Spain
August 1st, 2012 by vernon
Wherever Paul Simon was thinking of when writing the classic hit record, ‘The Sound of Silence’, one thing is for sure. He wasn’t dedicating the song to Spain.
The Spanish love noise. They would feel bereft without it.
But what are the sounds of Spain? The loud ones, and the less intrusive, quiet ones.
And where should you go to hear them?

Back roads of Spain – Granada to Almuñécar
July 3rd, 2012 by vernon
The Spanish authorities recently announced that the speed limit on A roads will be reduced to 90 kilometres per hour. Still sounds too fast for my liking.
Especially when the best way of seeing Spain is via the minor roads, and not the motorways. It is a more leisurely way of experiencing the country of Spain and ensures you get to experience places you would never have discovered should you travel only via the speedy autovias.
I suggest you follow my ABC plan. Take the A or B roads and see more of Spain. Here is the first in a short series of suggested routes.

Jazzing it up…in Almuñecar
June 20th, 2012 by Carol Byrne
A little way along from the popular destination of the Costa del Sol you´ll find the quieter Costa Tropical – popular too but more so with local Spanish mingling with the tourists looking for a tranquil beach holiday combined with traditional Spanish pueblos and local food. It´s the closest coastline for those staying in and around Granada, including the Alpujarras region and the Lecrín Valley. Almuñécar happens to make a great base too, with something for everyone and next month a little light Jazz too – let´s visit Almuñecar and see what they´re blowing their trumpets about!

While I was out walking in Spain
June 10th, 2012 by vernon
Spain lends itself to a great walk. Other than at the hottest times of the year, the landscape of this vast and varied country makes going for a stroll in the countryside a sheer joy. I never want to turn back and go home. There is always another corner to look around. Always another brow of a hill where you wonder what is on the other side.
And the sights you can see on a walk are as memorable as the countryside itself. Here is my personal photo gallery of just one walk i went on recently.
Around the Lecrin Valley.

The name’s the same in Spain
June 8th, 2012 by vernon
As you drive around Spain you will come across destinations that sound the same. Or they are spelt in a very similar fashion. They can be many miles apart. They can be very different locations. But each have something special to offer.
I do know of someone who, for example, thought they were being clever when they came out of Malaga airport and set their sat nav for their intended destination of Nigüelas, east of Malaga and south of Granada. They arrived, instead, in Nagüeles, west of Malaga and in Marbella.

‘Moor’ the merrier in Spain
April 28th, 2012 by vernon
Are there really religious tourists? That was the question fired at me recently. You better believe it, was my response. I know, I have met them.
And there are many people who want to see more of Spain. And by that i mean they want to learn more about the Moors. The people who once ruled Spain and whose influence is to be seen throughout the country.

Bus stop – La Alpujarra
April 8th, 2012 by vernon
The public transport service in Spain is excellent. So much of the attention is always on the high speed train service that now covers so much of the country and allows you to travel between the major cities at high speed.
But what if you want to see the country outside your window? Some trains go so fast it is difficult to take in the scenery.
I catch the bus. I think the superb coach network is a great way to see Spain.

What’s in a name? – in Spain
March 19th, 2012 by vernon
In Spain those displaying an ‘L’ plate for learner, or ‘P’ plate to prove that they recently passed their driving test, also show the place from where they are from.
Each time i see a driver displaying a sign in the back of their car that shouts proudly – ‘L’ MORON i have to laugh. The quality of the driving on Spanish roads is such that i think almost every driver should have a sign in their car that says MORON!
But, in this case, it refers to the place called Morón de la Frontera.
So what’s in a name?

People I’ve met in Spain – part 1
October 28th, 2011 by vernon
On my travels around Spain you are struck by how vast the country is. By how varied it is. And by how, when you take into account how big the country is, just how underpopulated Spain is.
But in among those people are some very interesting characters.
You see travelling through Spain is not simply about seeing the sights. Taking photographs of monuments such as the La Sagrada Familia (still a work in progress) or the Alhambra Palace in Granada (in essence a reform that just happens to be the biggest tourist attraction in Spain).
It is about the people you meet en route.

Market day in Spain
September 2nd, 2011 by vernon
What is so special about Spanish food markets? asked a visiting friend.
How long have you got? was my answer.
I’ve visited markets all over Spain and, be they little or large, they never fail to impress me.

Cultural Spain

You hear one word bandied about so often in relation to Spain. That word is ‘culture.’ People speak often of how they love the country for its culture.
But what comprises culture in Spain?

Take a hike in Spain
July 26th, 2011 by vernon
I feel sure that the most pleasant days I have had in Spain have been those spent on foot. Walking through mesmerising countryside. Strolling through stunning cities.
Discovering hidden gems simply by putting one foot in front of the other.
It can be hard work. Especially if you live, as I do, surrounded by mountains. No walk is flat for very long.
But the sheer variety of landscape throughout Spain means that you can experience all manner of walking terrain in the space of a day, let alone a week. I’m not a serious walker, but I’ve met those who are.
What is clear is that whether you walk Spain for 30 minutes or an entire day; you’ll be glad you did take a hike.

Castles in the Air
July 19th, 2011 by vernon
There are people who try to tour Spain staying in the many Paradors (plush hotels to you and me).
There are religious visitors to Spain who want to visit all the cathedrals.
They will all need at least two lifetimes to complete their respective missions.
As will castle spotters. Yes, you heard me right, there are people who hop in the car and travel around Spain in order to see the many and varied castles that adorn the country of Spain. They vary in appearance, grandeur, location and historical importance.
