It’s snow time in Spain
November 13th, 2012 by vernon
It is that time of the year. I look out of my window and what do I see. Snow.
There are still people who believe snow never finds it way to Spain, but it does. And, in some locations for many months of the year. And snow brings with it the chance to see places in Spain in a whole new light. A bright, white light.

Christmas time in Spain
October 17th, 2012 by vernon
One of the first things that attracted me to Spain was that, when I first set about living here, the country didn’t ‘do’ Christmas.
I recall being in Supermarkets in December and there was not a sign of Santa. No teasing with tinsel. No silly Christmas songs being played in any language.
For this long lost relation of Scrooge, that was bliss.

Any Port in Spain
September 11th, 2012 by vernon
How you arrive at your destination in Spain can make all the difference to your first impressions of the country. Flying is so much less attractive than it was in times gone past. It feels less special than it used to.
But arriving in a country by sea still has some inherent magic to it. Including when you arrive at one of the many Spanish ports.

Golf in Spain – the ‘hole’ truth
September 2nd, 2012 by vernon
Men who are into golf will be watching the Ryder Cup with the passion they reserve for this annual event. In 1997 Spain became the first country in continental Europe to stage the event.
Year after year men who love to play golf board aircraft to show off their green skills at golf courses all over Spain.
With the sheer quantity of golf facilities on offer in the country, you could be forgiven for thinking Spain invented the game.

Sea View Spain
August 31st, 2012 by vernon
I once met an estate agent in Spain who told me that a sea view was overrated.
He had an alternative take on the benefits of a view of the Mediterranean or Atlantic oceans.
“People buying a house with a sea view soon get bored of it. Within months they take it for granted. After all, not much happens. Once in a while you see a boat and get excited, and that’s it. Until the next boat. Really, in truth, it’s just heaps of water.”
Well this inland living boy was on the coast the other day, admiring the sea view from the house of friends. And I for one was transfixed.

Every Picture Tells a Story in Spain
August 29th, 2012 by vernon
Should i ever get a spare few months, i will sort out the multitude of photographs i have taken during ten years of travelling Spain. I envy those who have their pictures organised and neatly categorized.
When trawling through my thousands of photos it is more a case of lucky dip. But all bring back memories of life in Spain. But, just maybe, not as you know it.

Four seasons in Granada – Winter
August 20th, 2012 by vernon
When the skies are bright, there is a crisp feeling in the air and the sunshine is warm enough to sit out in for a few hours during the day. That means winter and you are in Granada.
Snow, plenty of it, looks down on the city centre from its place on the imperious Sierra Nevada mountains.
I love Granada in Winter.

Four Seasons in Granada – Autumn
August 16th, 2012 by vernon
In Spain the autumn leaves fall earlier than they do in northern Europe. It is every bit as lovely in Spain at that time of the year.
The hot summer suns have gone, but the sky is still a beautiful shade of blue. There is a breeze in the air and – best of all – the beaches are much quieter than they were in August.
The months of September and October offer visitors a taste of some of the nicest weeks in Spain.

Touchy, feely Spain
August 2nd, 2012 by vernon
Do not touch! Three words that drive me crazy. They turn up in the most inappropriate places these days.
No such problems in Spain. So much in the country begs you to touch it. Thank heavens for that, say I.
Having explored the sights, smells and sounds of Spain; it is now time to get all touchy feely.

On the road to Orgiva
July 7th, 2012 by vernon
In my continuing mission to travel the scenic, sometimes pot holed roads of Spain, i took the back road to the town of Orgiva.
Although, in truth, it is difficult to call any road to this well known town a major one. From whichever direction you approach Orgiva, you are at best on an ‘A’ road.

Dressing up in Spain
June 4th, 2012 by vernon
They love to dress for a party in Spain. Fiestas are full of folk flouncing around in fabulous outfits. It is not always clear what the costumes represent, but I always admire the outfits i see on men and women come party time all over Spain.
Here are just a few sights i have witnessed and photographed.

Trains and boats and planes
May 8th, 2012 by vernon
How do you like to arrive in Spain?
In the traditional fashion, by air? Or by sailing to your destination? Or, perhaps, by train?
First impressions are important and I have been very impressed when arriving at certain distinctive locations.

Why go to?… the Costa Tropical
April 5th, 2012 by vernon
A perennial question asked of me is: “why should i go to… what for… what’s there?”
If i had a Euro for every time i have been asked such a question, well, i wouldn’t be writing this now. I would be on the beach. And, more likely than not, somewhere along the Costa Tropical. The most appropriately named stretch of coastline in all of Spain.

Cafe culture in Spain – take it outside!
April 2nd, 2012 by vernon
I had my doubts that the chain smoking Spanish would be prepared to stand outside bars and cafes when the smoking ban was implemented two years ago. But i was wrong. In Spain, as in so many countries today, you can see customers stood outside in all weathers keeping up to their cigarette smoking habit.
And, as a result, cafe culture on the streets has taken off. There are now more and more outside seating areas. The irony, of course, is that those who used to sit outside to avoid the smoke may now opt to go inside in order to… avoid the smoke!
But is there a better way to soak up Spanish life than sitting outside a cafe or bar and watching the world go by?
No.

Going Inland – Lecrín Valley
March 31st, 2012 by vernon
You can holiday in a place in Spain. You can live there full time. But you don’t get to know a place until you get to know its people.
On the coast, people come and go. Inevitably so. But inland many a Spanish town or village is made up chiefly of those who have lived there all their lives.
The Lecrín Valley is comprised of a collection of white washed villages where many a resident has not strayed further than this place where oranges and lemons grow aplenty and where life is sweet, not sour.

Going inland. Velez de Benaudalla, a winning town.
March 21st, 2012 by vernon
I live 20 minutes inland from the coast. An ideal compromise i find. Equidistant between a superb city and a coastline that boats warm winter temperatures. When it gets cold inland I simply drive down to the Costa Tropical to warm up and spectate people wearing little more than shorts and sandals. A sight that never fails to amaze me.
It’s a whole other world. You do not have to travel far to soon realise that living inland is a world away from being by the sea.
Heavens! There are folk who have been watching the waves for many years who have never journeyed inland. Never, i tell you. Even in Spain it seems, there’s nowt so queer as folk!
What are they missing? Well a great deal, actually. And I am going to be writing about some inland destinations that can be reached within a half hour drive of the beach.

Sporty Spain
January 4th, 2012 by vernon
Spain has become famous for producing some of the most successful sports teams and individual stars of the last few years.
Tennis has Rafael Nadal. Cycling boasts Alberto Contador. Then, of course, there is the Spanish football team, World champions. And FC Barcelona, champions of Europe, and admired the world over for the way they play the beautiful game.
So how come Spain has produced so many winners in recent years?

Motril – fit for a Princess
May 2nd, 2011 by vernon
It came as no surprise to anyone living in Spain that recent events at Westminster Abbey were watched by millions of TV viewers in Spain. They are mad about royalty here. They adore their own royal family.
I witnessed this when Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia were the first members of the Spanish royal family to visit the coastal city of Motril in September 2006.
The good people of Motril are very proud of their town and of the royal family. They came out in there thousands to greet the royal couple.

Lakes in Spain
April 26th, 2011 by vernon
So you want to rent a property, or live full time, in a peaceful and tranquil part of Spain. You would like a vast expanse of water close by, but not seaside crowds. You want to look upon clear turquoise waters, whatever the weather.
Why not try lake living? I undertook a road trip that took in just a handful of the many lakes in Spain. Those staying or living near a lake were very positive about the benefits of lake living. Even when the blue waters were shrouded in fog or low cloud, I could see what they were talking about.
The lakes of Spain remind me of autumn mornings in the English Lake District.
And here is why.
