Quick trips to Spain – In and around Murcia
January 22nd, 2013 by Carol Byrne
Sometimes, there is just time for a flying visit, a quick trip to recharge the batteries and top up on rejuvenation levels. Many people are fans of the quick trip, several small long weekends in the year can sometimes be more beneficial than taking the full fortnight at one time. It gives one more to look forward to as well, and breaks up the monotony of the working year. Lots more to see too, and if you love Spain, then see more of it in 2013 – the country is so varying in culture, food, sights, climate, people and their customs – and you don’t have to be an anthropologist to appreciate it!

But there are several places to go where winter warmth is on offer every year. Some obvious locations, others more surprising.
Here are some suggestions where to go to chill out, but not be chilly.

Grapes are all around me. A friend cannot give me enough. A neighbour has land where I am encouraged to take as many grapes as I wish.
If things carry on this way I will soon be running my own bodega. But there is no need to. There are plenty for you and me to visit throughout Spain.
So let’s go on a road trip. You can drink. I will drive.

Any Port in Spain
September 11th, 2012 by vernon
How you arrive at your destination in Spain can make all the difference to your first impressions of the country. Flying is so much less attractive than it was in times gone past. It feels less special than it used to.
But arriving in a country by sea still has some inherent magic to it. Including when you arrive at one of the many Spanish ports.

Men who are into golf will be watching the Ryder Cup with the passion they reserve for this annual event. In 1997 Spain became the first country in continental Europe to stage the event.
Year after year men who love to play golf board aircraft to show off their green skills at golf courses all over Spain.
With the sheer quantity of golf facilities on offer in the country, you could be forgiven for thinking Spain invented the game.

Four Seasons in Granada – Autumn
August 16th, 2012 by vernon
In Spain the autumn leaves fall earlier than they do in northern Europe. It is every bit as lovely in Spain at that time of the year.
The hot summer suns have gone, but the sky is still a beautiful shade of blue. There is a breeze in the air and – best of all – the beaches are much quieter than they were in August.
The months of September and October offer visitors a taste of some of the nicest weeks in Spain.

Eat Spain
May 2nd, 2012 by vernon
Those taking a holiday in Spain can be a little bewildered when it comes to eating out in the country. What should they have for breakfast? When is lunch served? And why, oh why, do they have to wait so late to eat dinner. Or, for some, supper!
The whole what to and when to aspect to life in Spain. It takes some getting used to. Especially if you are in the country for only a short time.

Bus Stop – to Granada
April 19th, 2012 by vernon
I never cease to be amazed at how many people living or holidaying along the coastlines of Spain never hop on a bus to see more of the country. Especially the cities that are easily reachable in a day.
In Spain it is wise to see more than the sea. So leave the car at home and get on one of the comfortable coaches that run daily linking so many coastal towns, with inland villages, and the distinctive cities beyond.
Here is such a journey. I take the bus to gorgeous Granada.

Going Inland – Caravaca de la Cruz
April 1st, 2012 by vernon
You may have gathered by now that i love inland Spain. I cannot recall when i last sat on a beach, but i do remember being bored within ten minutes. Or was it five?
Each to their own and all that, but I would much rather be motoring around Spain, or using the excellent public transport available in the country, in order to discover new destinations that are ideal for a holiday or simply a day out.

Spain on film – take 2
February 27th, 2012 by vernon
It has been a long few weeks of thespians patting each other on the back and handing out awards.
The BAFTAS, the OSCARS and the GOYAS. And films shot in Spain have been nominated for prizes at all three ceremonies. Especially, of course, the latter.
Which is when the great and the good of the Spanish film world get together to praise the work of those who do such a great job. Not just of making movies but, crucially, of promoting the glorious country of Spain via the big screen.

People I’ve met in Spain – take 3 girls
October 31st, 2011 by vernon
Many years ago the best advice I received from someone living in the country went as follows:-
“Being on holiday in Spain,Vernon, is very different from living here full time.”
I confess that back then I didn’t fully understand what my friend was on about. But I do now.
Spain is a great country in which to have a holiday. It is a spectacular country to tour and see in all its varied splendour. And living here full time can be an unforgettable experience, but it is very different from simply being on holiday.
Don’t take my word for it, listen to the words of my final trio of people I’ve met on my travels – all of whom have settled in the country and all of whom have worked at it. Literally.

Just off the motorway in Spain – Part 1
July 28th, 2011 by vernon
I’m taking to the road again to find you some hidden treasures. I shall wait until the summer is over before venturing too far on the minor roads.
The motorways of Spain are great. They love constructing them.
Yes, as is the case everywhere, they destroy some of the flora and fauna when doing so.
But in Spain they don’t wait for a route to become a traffic nightmare before building a motorway.
I have travelled all over Spain and, with the obvious exception of the manner in which many people drive, I have found it to be a pleasure. I shall never forget a four hour journey on a Saturday where I saw so few other cars that I convinced myself the world had come to an end.
But the joy of driving on Spanish motorways also revolves around coming off them and discovering some charming locations within minutes of the autovia.
