Getting to know Nerja

You can think you know a place in Spain, but later discover you didn’t really know it at all. I have known of Nerja for several years. Maybe i have been there only twice a year for the past ten years. But i did not truly get to know Nerja until much more recently. When i spent three days there in the space of one week. And, more and more, i liked what i saw.

The Nerja Caves

Discovered purely by chance in 1959, by three friends, the Nerja cave complex is now Spain’s fourth most visited monument. Since the early 1960s, the caves have attracted approximately 500,000 visitors a year. The enormous natural caves have been carved out of the marble and limestone rock of the Sierra de Almijara. Running for almost five kilometers, the complex has been divided up into two sections, Nerja I and Nerja II. Nerja I is accessible to the public, while the Nerja II section is closed to public viewing. Indeed, only a quarter of the cave’s surface area is open to the public.
