January in Spain. Part 4 Canary Islands

A little Winter sunshine to warm your bones and some Vitamin D to set you up for the year ahead. What a nice thought, and where better than the Canary Islands, where you can lounge around on the beach even at this time of year, due to the proximity to Africa and the year round warm temperatures without having to spend 2 days of your holiday on a plane.  If you’re also a classical music buff then even better to choose the Canaries for your Winter break – sunshine and music, the perfect combination – without the long haul!

Celebrate St Andrew…in Tenerife!

November 14th, 2012 by Carol Byrne

Carol Byrne
Well, come on, it’s not so strange! St Patrick is celebrated every year nowhere else like New York. San Jordi – St George – is celebrated every year in Catalunya – so why not St Andrew?  Come to Tenerife later this month and take part in the party for San Andrés – St Andrew. You don’t have to be Scottish, or even have to wear a kilt to attend  – but you can if you really want to! By the way, I do hope you like lots of noise as you’ll need to remember to pack your own pots and pans…!

Chorizo, well, you can´t turn on a T.V. cookery programme without seeing it used in one form or another… But what about the Canary Islands? Do they do things any differently there? Let´s take a look and a little taste of what the sunshine islands have to offer…

For most that means an early Spanish holiday, a time for relaxing and recharging, a time to start the Summer with a smile and an early suntan.  May for most of Spain means the start of the fiesta season, so let´s kick off  the party with the floral Festival of the Crosses...

Star gazing in Spain

December 22nd, 2011 by John Kramer

The night skies that our ancestors have taken for granted for millions of years are disappearing before our very eyes. According to the International Dark Sky association, a child born today in either Europe or the US has only a one in ten chance of witnessing  a truly dark sky. The thousands of stars that were once visible to the naked eye are now increasingly obscured by industrial light and pollution. Recent estimates from both sides of the Atlantic suggest that city dwellers will only get a glimpse of 500 stars at any one time. In undisturbed areas, the Milky Way should be clearly visible and with it over 15,000 stars. Under these optimum conditions you should expect to see over 30 meteors per hour.

If you are swatting up on winter sun destinations this year I can highly recommend the Canary Islands. Naked in the Canaries

August 19th, 2011 by John Kramer

The Canary Islands are without a doubt the place to be if you are looking for some winter sunshine. A mere four hour flight from colder Northern climes, over 320 days of sunshine a year, and an unbeatable selection of holiday accommodation in the Canary Islands. What more could you hope for? How about the chance to spend most of your holiday in the nude?  That’s right, in the nude. May be its the sun, the holiday atmosphere, the proximity to the Sahara, the unbeatable scenery, who knows? but more and more people are opting for that over-all body tan. Nudist beaches are in high demand. None more so, than the ones in the Canaries. So where to go….?

Seeing Stars in Spain

August 18th, 2011 by vernon

For decades Spain has attracted big names from the world of literature, music, cinema, politics and sport. They have sought sun and seclusion. Success in showbiz or the arts has led many an author, musician, actor or footballer to buy a home in Spain. Many fell in love with the country and never returned to the UK. For others it provides a hideaway. A peaceful setting from which to get inspiration for the next record or book. A pool to sit by where you can read your lines for the next part in a Hollywood blockbuster. When so called ‘A listers’ move to Spain they hope it will go unnoticed by the press and the glossy magazines. But it never does. However, there are many people in the public eye who do manage to live some of the year in Spain and be largely anonymous.

Tenerife; Lunar Landscapes and White Sandy Beaches

Enjoy the pleasures of swimming and sunbathing on one of the many beaches around Tenerife while glancing up towards the spectacular snow tipped volcano El Teide. Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and the evident contrasts is more apparent than on any of the other islands. The south being famous for its long stretches of white sandy beaches, the north famous for its rocky coastline and stunning green nature, while the central part of the island is dominated by lunar like landscape which is the result from all the volcanic activity on the island.

August 23rd, 2010 by John Kramer

The semi-arid Island of Fuerteventura lies just 52 nautical miles off the coast of Morocco. Situated in the Atlantic, Fuerteventura is the second largest Canary Island, after Tenerife. With a near perfect climate, average monthly temperatures ranging from 17°C in January to 25°C in August and with some of the best beaches to be found, it is not hard to understand why Fuerteventura is quickly gaining in popularity.

The Canary Islands offer year long hot temperatures and a great beach holiday destination, but there is more to the islands than just that. The different islands offer amazing natural formations that are breathtaking and unusual to any other part of Europe. Visiting the islands of the volcanoes with their lunar landscapes but also lush vegetation is something out of the ordinary and makes it worth a visit to this Spanish region.
