The district consists of numerous mountain villages set amidst valleys which are amongst the most fertile in Spain. The landscape contains a rich abundance of fruit trees, such as oranges, lemons, almonds, figs and grape vines all set within with the backdrop of the impressive mountains in the north, Sierra Nevada. The village of Trevélez is especially associated with the great variety of air-cured ham due to the considerable elevation of the village which results perfect for curing ham. Trevélez is located 1,476 meters above sea level and is Spain´s highest located town! When visiting the area of Las Alpujarras it is recommended to try the local dish “Plato Alpujarreño” which consists of scalloped potatoes sautéed with onion and green peppers, a couple different sausages, a fried egg and some slices of cured ham.
