Situated towards the south of Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen is by far the liveliest resort on the island.
Puerto del Carmen started life as a fishing village and its picturesque harbour at the southern end of the resort is still very much in action. It is a lovely place to unwind over a drink and watch the fishing boats come and go, and if you wander into the square nearby you’ll see the locals playing boules. When you feel more energetic, there is plenty to do here.
Puerto del Carmen offers 5km of broad, pale sandy beaches as well as a wide variety of places to eat and drink and it remains a popular destination for holidaymakers from far and wide. Made up of a ‘new’ and ‘old’ town, Puerto del Carmen has no high-rise structures and almost all buildings are white and unpretentious.
Island Watersports offers tours and instruction in snorkelling and scuba-diving, or you can go riding courtesy of the Rancho Texas riding stables in Puerto del Carmen itself or Lanzarote a Caballo at Yaiza.
You can admire the underwater world from a submarine or a glass-bottomed boat or try your hand at deep-sea fishing – who knows, you might be lucky and catch the coveted marlin, or even a shark! There are also numerous excursions to attractions further afield.
On the southern cost of Lanzarote, the one with less wind, is the oldest and best-known holiday resort Puerto del Carmen - the pulsating tourist centre of the Island - with two merging areas: its original downtown area of La Tiñosa which unfolds around the old fishermens port and its very special atmosphere; and the new part which has been developing along the 6 -7 km long sandy beach and promenade Avenida de las Playas over the last thirty years or so.
Puerto del Carmen is the ideal holiday resort for the sun worshipper who only wants to rest on the beach, as for the early bird who loves to take walks at sunrise, and also for the night owl who cares for dancing and entertainment.
A wide selection of shops and shopping centres, entertainment halls, restaurants and bars offers all sorts of possibilities for good buys and leisure activities, both during the day and at night. People of all nationalities and age-groups can be met here.
