Located between the sea and the mountains, and just 30 minutes south of Barcelona on Spain’s Costa Dorada, the former fishing village of Sitges is one of the holiday hotspots of the Costa Dorada.

The city of Sitges (which belongs to Barcelona) offers a wide variety of leisure activities to visitors. The Coast of Garraf, on the Mediterranean sea and the surrounding mountains, provide a beautiful natural setting to this town. The interesting historic quarter, with an extensive cultural calendar, complements the luxury compounds, golf courses and marinas right next to the beach. The cuisine from Sitges gathers the most representative Catalan dishes and creates exquisite recipes like "xató".Sitges is a lovely village 35 Km South of Barcelona, and it’s absolutely worth a visit. Sitges is known for its carnival, its nice weather and its night life.

If you are going to stay in Barcelona, and are looking for a nice town on the coast, look no further. Sitges is the perfect one day excursion from Barcelona. But Sitges is much more than a place to spend one day. The list of things to do here is almost endless. If you ever come here, be prepared to want to spend the rest of your life in this unique town.

With its more than 300 sunny days, Sitges is a secure bet to spend the summer vacations. And you have to know that thanks to its special micro-climate, "Summer" lasts here longer than anywhere else in the area.
Sitges, parish church

The first mention of Sitges dates back to the 10th century, when a small castle was built over the ruins of an old Iberian settlement. During the following years houses were built on the surroundings of the castle. Sitges was being born.

A couple of centuries later, new castles and a monastery were built. But till the 15th century the different castles were not united. Since then Sitges is a town.

In the middle ages, Sitges used to be the only port town on the coast from Barcelona to Tarragona. The town main industries were its vineyards and the commercial activities with other ports in the Mediterranean. From one of these ports, the Greek island of Monembasia, a new variety of grape was imported, the malvasia.

Sitges, town street
Sitges is a relatively small town. The city has no more than 20,000 inhabitants. Maybe in Summer this figure is higher. Most of the season residents have an apartment in the outskirts of Sitges (Aiguadolç, El Vinyet-Terramar, Els Ametllers, Vallpineda. La Llevantina). Some of the year long residents live in the new housing estates of Garraf II and "Les Botigues de Sitges".

The town center is the place to be. It is small enough to be visited in one day. If you come in Summer, wait till late in the afternoon, when the sun will make your stroll much more pleasant. You wont need a map. Just follow your senses...

The town has everything a family with kids can desire. If you are staying in Sitges, you can also drop by Port Aventura, a brilliant Theme Park in northeast Spain on the Costa Daurada near Salou. Less than half an hour from Sitges.
