El Portil town is the most popular beach resort on the Costa de la Luz in Huelva. During July and August lots of Spanish holiday makers visit the town and its beaches so its worth booking accommodation in advance if you wish to travel there in summerholidays.
It sits on the banks of the Río Odiel river estuary and is surrounded by extensive salt marshes, which create the "El Paraje Natural Marismas del Odiel", the most important natural park in the area after the "Doñana National Park". It has some of the best migration and general bird watching anywhere in Europe.
In the early 1900’s Spanish visitors started to take their holidays here, when a ferry line from Huelva was established with steam boats crossing to carry tourists. During the summer, boats known as canoas still run today between Huelva and Punta Umbría at regular intervals.
Today it is still a Spanish resort and still retains its Spanish charm, but the rest of Europe has now found it, hearing an English voice is now less rare than it used to be.
There are some superb beaches running along the south side of the punta (point). The closest beach to the town is the Playa La Mata Negra, provided with many restaurants, bars and summer" chiringuitos". This beach has all the facilities you require, such as parasols and sunbeds, showers, toilets and lifeguard operating in the summer months. Windsurfing, sailing and boat trips are one of the range of activities and water sports you can practice.
