not-to-miss spot in your visit to the Alpujarra! Tourist information about Capileira in Spain. Travel to Capileira and let Spain-Holiday.com guide and accommodate you |
Capileira is a very curious village of the Alpujarra and well-worth a visit. I say curious, because it looks like as if it has fallen from heaven. Between the highest part and the lowest part of the village there is 100m distance and some houses are really built on the edge of the gorge. It is also the second highest village of Spain, with an altitude of 1435 metres above the sea level it comes just after Trevelez, which is the highest village. Capileira is located on the limit of the eternal snow of Sierra Nevada, where it looks as if the clock stands still. You will be amazed by dramatic views to contemplate down the valley and up the mountain backdrop of Sierra Nevada
Capileira, Pampaneira and Bubion form the "gorge of Poqueira". All 3 villages maintain the original spirit of the culture of the Alpujarra, thier habits and respect the nature.
Capileira has a mediterranean climate with about 300 days of sunshine, but much drier as the villages on the coast, so ideal weather all year long. There are cold, but beautiful winters (frosts are common and occasionally snow falls in Capileira) and the daily summer temperature is around 30 ºC. It is located on 52 km from the coast and 80 km from Granada city centre.
Capileira is a traditional village in the alpujarra, but as a tourist you will be well supplied. There are several small bars and restaurants where you can choose out of a wide variety of Moorish recipes, vegetarian dishes, pizza’s, all generously served. You can mix among the locals enjoying a tapa with a “caña”, or beer right before having lunch. While you do this, you will be able to see the main square full of children playing, watched by their parents and grandparents. In the Alpujarra, people live “outside”.
Apart from the bars and restaurants, the tourists can also find some typical shops, such as “La Alacena”, which is a cellar stocked with cured mountain hams, goats cheese, almond cakes, barrels of wine, honeys and pastries and has a little bar tucked round the back for those who wish to sample first. Apart from that one, there are first necessity stores, such as 2 supermarkets, chemist’s, medical practise, clothes shops, banks with cash dispenser, a museum and artesanial shops with typical Moorish products such as ceramics, rugs, etc
Capileira is located in wonderful scenery, that invites you to have a walk in the nature and practise hiking. There are multiple walking routes along the river where you will see walnut, cherry and grand old chestnut trees, who go up to the ravine or higher into the National Park, through pine forest and scrub oak to protected lands, where herds of wild ibex roam, eagles and other hunters soar above and an extraordinary wealth of wild flowers and butterflies are close at hand.
Higher still, winter snows lie thick until late spring, when the summit of Mulhacén can be reached at 3481 metres (over 11,000 feet). A refuge on Mulhacén provides a rest and overnight spot.
Capileira is situated on the southern skirts of the Sierra Nevada where it enjoys a Mediterranean climate without the humidity that pervades the coast. It affords a relief and escape from the heat of high summer and perfect walking temperatures in spring and autumn. There can be terrific sunny days in winter, too, but being at high altitude it is cold at night so hearty log fires are in order. Lively in summer, mysterious in winter, Capileira truly is a magical place.
