With a population of just under 14 000

Much of the area is like desert. However, there is a relatively new forest here - the first in the area for some 500 years. This is the beginning of a long-term project to transform much of the area into lush greenery. The trees include almonds, oak and eucalyptus, as well as the ubiquitous palm.
Many visitors remark that the area is more like Arizona or Australia than the Mediterranean coast.
With dams under construction the problems associated with the acute water shortages will be overcome.
The town has good facilities, with Hotels, restaurants, a modern hospital, a municipal swimming pool and leisure centre.
