Colmenar is situated on the most westerly point of La Axarquia only 35 km from Malaga. Colmenar is a real mountain retreat enjoying all the charm of inland Axarquia.

With a population of just over 3200 it is largely untouched by the commercial tourism of the coast and continues a traditional rural way of life where mules are still a common form of transport and the olive, almond and grape harvests are an important part of the social calendar. That said, Colmenar can be a lively place at times and there is a good range of bars, shops and restaurants all of which are very welcoming, especially to visitors.
Every year Colmenar hosts a number of fiestas whether that be the spring festival in honour of the Virgin de la Candelaria, Semana Santa, the mid-summer feria or the autumn festival to celebrate the grape harvest. The nearby villages and towns of Riogordo, Comares, Casabermeja and Alfarnate all have their own fiestas making Colmenar an ideal base from which to enjoy typical rural Andalucian life.

The road from Malaga known as the Carretera de Colmenar brings us through pine woods and beautiful countryside to the Malaga Mountain towns in the most westerly part of the Axarquía. This too is the road to Colmenar, known as the Capital of the Malaga Mountains. On the way into the municipality we see the stone steeple called the Puerta de La Cruz, showing the coat-of-arms of the town as a beehive with seven bees flying over it. A historical scene there brings us back to the year 1488, when the town was handed over by Hamet el Zuque to Francisco de Coalla. Past this we come to the town of Colmenar itself, and looking from here we can see two hills that used to mark the limits between the urban centre and the surrounding countryside.
