The city of Murcia is situated in the South East of the Iberian Peninsula. Its the capital of the Autonomous Community of the same name, that, with an area of 11,317 km2, is, the largest autonomous community of only one province in Spain.
The metropolitan area of Murcia spreads over 881 km2 and it is made up of the capital city and 54 towns and villages.
Geographically its divided into two very different areas: the Huerta, which spreads along the banks of the river Segura and the countryside, dry land situated to the Northwest, Northeast and South of the region.
The average height above the sea level is about 43 metres.
Murcia is an open and dynamic city with a privileged situation in the Mediterranean, making it very attractive for congresses and cultural activities.
Situated in the meridian border of the Temperate Zone, it enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate, as its proximity to the sea acts as a thermal cushion. The average annual temperatures in Murcia stay around 18 ºC. The winters are mild with an average in January of 10.2 ºC and the summers are very hot with an average of 25.7 ºC.
The rains are scarce and irregular, as are cloudy days, as there are more than 2800 hours of sun annually.
The constant good weather is a reason for many to visit us at any time of the year.
A tour of Moorish Murcia is what we would like to offer you right now, as well as seasonal offers from "Murcia a la carta" which are suited to more specific times of the year.
The people of Murcia know how to welcome visitors, but the Murcian doesnt have to make an effort to be kind, because by nature they are wonderful hosts due to their generous, open and easy-going character. It is significant that one of the symbols of the city is a Matron feeding another child while her own child looks on.
The Huerta:
It has been said that in order to know Murcia, it is necessary to know the Huerta, as it is difficult to understand one without the other. Spreading throughout the Vega Media area of the river Segura, it occupies the plain between two parallel mountain ranges through which the river Segura runs on its way to the sea.
The Arabs came up with a complete system of irrigation and they made use of these fertile plains. The Contraparada weir, started by the Romans and perfected by the Moors, is the starting point of a clever system which takes advantage of the water. It allows the water to enter the Vega, so that, via the many irrigation channels which branch out, it can reach the furthest point of both sides of the river, encouraging for centuries the cultivation of fruit trees, especially citrus fruits, and vegetables.
El paseo del Malecón:
It is the best known Murcian esplanade in one of the most emblematic places of our city. The fight against floods has always been present, and this walkway has been fundamental in their prevention.
El Malecón is a wall built against the water of the River Segura. It originates from the XV century and, despite being the object of various repairs, by the XVIII century it had deteriorated considerably because of the rain, the wind, horses and the continuous traffic of the city. For these reasons, it was rebuilt in 1736 by the Mayor of the city, D. Francisco de Luján y Arce.
Nowadays, it is an exceptional esplanade three metres above the ground. It stretches more than 15,000 metres into the "Huerta" or agricultural countryside like a stone tongue around the Western Side of the city, running between the Botanical gardens and those of the old Convent of San Francisco. It is made up of an area for leisure and the esplanade, from which you can enjoy magnificent views. If you want to rest there are numerous stone benches along the walkway.
Los Jerónimos:
A few kilometres from the city centre, in the middle of the "Huerta", is the monastery of "Los Jerónimos", a building which belonged to the order of the same name, which can also be found in Madrid.
It was built at the beginning of the XVIII century by the architect, and monk of the same order, Antonio de San José, for the Jerónimos monks, who were looking for a place in the "Huerta" free from flooding. Declared a National Historical Monument, it has been called the Murcian "Escorial" and is a work of great proportions.
The Casino:
As the saying goes, "if walls could talk…" the old and well-loved Casino could tell us many stories, tales and anecdotes, which are an important part of the history of the city, sometimes as the protagonist, at others the silent witness. That, together with the unique beauty of the building, has made the Casino one of the important parts of Murcias identity, and one of which the Murcians feel very proud.
The Cathedral:
If we had to define the Cathedral of Murcia in one word perhaps it would be HUELLAS (footprints), as this was the name of the important exhibition which took place during the first half of the year 2002. However, above all, this is the best name because of the Cathedrals past -as there is nothing better than this extraordinary building to reflect the memory, time, art and history of Murcia- and also its present and future. For the Murcians the name is apt as they love and feel proud of the cathedral -and for the visitors, because it leaves an unforgettable image in their minds.
The Castle of Monteagudo:The Castle of Monteagudo is situated on the top of a hill formed by calcareous rock, from which you can see the whole of the northern valley of the "Huerta". On its hillsides sits the town of Monteagudo, some five kilometres from the city of Murcia and ten kilometres from Orihuela. It constitutes one of the most impressive and well-preserved fortifications in the region of Murcia. In recent years, the Autonomous Community has been carrying out excavation, restoration and fitting out of the entrances in order to make it easier to appreciate its sociocultural and tourist value.
It was situated in this place for strategic reasons, namely it is a military building. As its name suggests (Monte-agut), the fortification occupies a very abrupt massif with a height of 149m and it spreads over two platforms with a diameter of 400m. At its feet runs the "camino viejo de Monteagudo" (the old Monteagudo road) joining two important routes running from the city: the Alicante and Castille roads.
