Andratx is a charming little town that sits amid hillsides covered in almond, orange and olive trees. The town is located slightly inland, the reason being prevention of pirate attacks. You will find Andratx in the south west corner of Mallorca, just west of Palma. During the 13th century, Andratx was the home of both the Bishop of Barcelona and King Jaume I.
Located in the lowest foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains, the municipality of Andratx borders the municipalities of Estellencs and Calvià to the east and the sea to the south, west and north.
Andratx is the last town, 26 km from Palma, along the well-developed West-highway. Especially beautiful in Andratx (10.000 inhabitants) is the view from the C-719 with the big church and the geometrically arranged streets.
The abundant variety of its landscape, characterised by spectacular encounters of sea and mountain, and the quality of the services it offers, which includes select residential estates and prestigious recreational ports, have made Andratx the favourite destination of celebrities of all kinds.
Its coastlines most striking features, Camp de Mar and Andratx bays and Sant Elm beach, are also the municipalitys main tourist centres
Wednesday morning is market day in Andratx and the streets fill with stalls selling local produce. Local cheeses and fish are fantastic and fresh. Vegetables give a wash of colour. Tourists, especially on Wednesday when there is the weekly market, occupy the market place below the church.
The upper part of town consists of old houses along cobbled streets. At the top is the fortress-like church of Santa Maria. From here you can see the Port of Andratx. At the port you will see traditional fishing boats happily moored alongside luxury yachts. The port is very important to the island as a major tourist spot.
Nearby are the beaches of Sant Elm and the small islands of Pantaleu and Sa Dragonera which is really a 6km long rock. It is so named because of its likeness to a dragons back rising out of the water.
You must also visit the Son Mas Castle which now houses some very important paintings by Durer and Tintoretto.
Beautiful is also the in 1998 constructed City Hall with its botanic garden in the former Manor-house Son Mas.
