The Costa Blanca ...... ‘The White Coast’
Spain's Costa Blanca which runs from Denia in the North to Alicante in the South has been a popular tourist destination for many years, Hemmingway being a frequent visitor during the 1930's. A mild all-year-round climate and an average of 320 days sunshine each year adds to the attraction. The World Health Organisation has designated this area as possessing one of the finest climates found anywhere, and the EU has awarded many of the beaches in the area the prestigious "blue flag" for water quality and cleanliness several years running.
The landscape of the Northern Costa Blanca is blessed with greenery year round, with wonderful mountain vistas looking inland from the many kilometres of beaches, or within the fabulous valleys, famous for their wine.
The coast is dotted with unspoilt Spanish villages and resorts, popular with visitors looking for the more relaxing side of Spain and wishing to avoid mass tourism.
In addition the region boasts many established and new Golf courses, one of the biggest water parks and also Theme parks in Europe, (Terra Mitica) as well as unparalleled water sports. There are some of the largest Marine Parks in Europe clustered within the boundaries of the Northern Costa Blanca, as well as good water conditions and visibility.
The Costa Blanca also offers fantastic walking country, with well-marked paths through fragrant scrub with breathtaking views. Even if you don’t want to go walking, it’s well worthwhile exploring inland by car.
The Capital City of the Province is The historic and cultural city of Valencia, with its rich history and some of the best beaches in Spain. The city is a vibrant mix of old and new with its Historic District with medieval buildings and magnificent cathedral. Valencia also has many museums including The Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Valencia and many beautiful parks and gardens. A more recent addition and well worth visiting, is the complex El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia. The building was designed for opera and The Performing Arts and there are various performances throughout the year. It goes without saying that this cosmopolitan and international city also boasts restaurants and nightlife to suit every taste. Valencia also has a large international airport and along with Alicante is the main gateway to the Costa Blanca.
Heading down the coast, are several unspoilt and exclusive coastal towns and villages. The bustling town of Denia has a 11th century castle dominating the town, long sandy beaches, exclusive Marina, good selection of shops, and many beach front restaurants and bars. Denia also is a thriving port from where you can catch Ferries to Ibiza and Majorca.
Heading south from Denia you come to the delightful seaside town of Javea, a very popular holiday destination for the Spanish who have permanent holiday homes here. It consists of an old town ‘The Pueblo’ with its 12th Century Church, Inglesia San Bartolome and cobbled streets, a quaint, working fishing port with many good beachfront restaurants, and the popular El Arenal, with its wide expanse of sandy beach, popular with families, and a promenade with a lively selection of restaurants and bars and evening street market in the summer months. There is a weekly market on Thursdays.

Again heading south you come to the exclusive former fishing village of Moraira, now an upmarket holiday destination with its sandy beach, exclusive villas set in the hills, Club Nautico, and a good selection of international restaurants. It’s Friday market is also well worth a visit.
Just inland from Moraira is the pretty town of Jalon or (Xalo) situated in the beautiful Jalon Valley, and area with a well earned reputation for the quality of its wines, olives and citrus products. This wonderfully rugged rural area has mountains nearing 5000ft high. The little town of Jalon has a variety of shops selling local produce and an old square with an open market on Tuesday mornings. Every Saturday morning the promenade along the riverbank is the venue for a second hand fair ‘Rastro’. Shops, Bodegas, bars and restaurants abound.
A pretty 20 minute drive down the coast from Moraira is the lively, thriving town of Calpe. Calpe is famous for its long sandy beaches, Club Nautico with its good selection of restaurants serving fresh fish caught daily and its impressive rock called the Penon de Ifach. Calpe boasts s 15th century church and a very good archeological museum showing various finds of the 4th & 8th century.
The beautiful town of Altea has a wonderfully preserved old town, famous for its church Nuestra Senoa del Consuelo or Viegen de Consuelo with its shimmering blue domed roof. Altea also has a very pretty harbour.
The popular Holiday Destination of Benidorm with its 7 km of fabulous sandy beaches, beachfront restaurants and hotels and extensive nightlife and entertainment, is also popular with many.
A short drive inland to the mountains is the beautiful, quaint, historic village of Guadalest popular with walkers and sightseers alike. Worth visiting for its breathtaking scenery, 12th century castle literally hanging on a hillside, its white washed houses and a variety of craft shops and restaurants.
Not far from Guadalest are the Algar Waterfalls. A refreshing and welcome experience in the hot summer months. The Algar riverside is a very nicely maintained area with pathways along the various waterfalls and natural pools.
Alicante is a thriving metropolis, with long sandy beaches, good hotels, many places of interest and a good International Airport from which you have easy access to the many villages and towns of the Costa Blanca.
Despite the non-stop building of the last 30 years or so, the Costa Blanca doesn’t, for the most part, feel over-developed or spoilt. With its street markets, and almost year round Fiestas, each of the towns and country areas has its own uniqueness. If you don’t know the Costa Blanca, get out here now, hire a villa and car and prepare to explore - and enjoy yourself. The Costa Blanca, ‘The White Coast’ offers something for everyone.
