Notes
Jerez de la Frontera area:
These are the things that you can do in Jerez or surrounding areas

Flamenco

Jerez is considered the “Birthplace of Flamenco”. This city has been, since the turn of the last century, the city which has produced the most, and best singers, dancers and guitarists in the whole history of Flamenco. The most important churches in Jerez, built after the Christian conquest of the city, have lent their names to its most traditional quarters: Santiago and San Miguel, where the roots of the Buleria are to be found.

In the very heart of the Santiago quarter, located in the Penmartin Palace, stands the Andalusian Flamenco Centre, equipped with the most up-to-date audiovisual technology, its specialised library and extensive sound archives provide an insight into the history and understanding of this very special art form which is so deeply rooted in the spirit of the local inhabitants.

Jerez offers the very best of Flamenco each day in its famous tablaos, in addition to some very interesting flamenco performances: from flamenco recitals in the numerous Peña Flamenca clubs scattered around the city, the traditional Buleria Festival (September), to the famous Jerez International Flamenco Festival, which takes place each year during February and March.

Sports

The Sherry Golf Course is only 1.5km out of Jerez and can therefore be considered as a golf course very close to the town centre and can be easily and quickly reached from the apartment, (about 10 minutes drive). It comprises a 18 holes Championship Course (par 72) and a 9 holes par 3 course, (par 27), thereby providing a challenge for both amateurs and professionals alike.

There is also the prestigious Montecastillo Barceló Golf Resort, which is only 6km away.

Brandy and Wine

Jerez’s exceptional geographical location, its close proximity to the Atlantic, the local chalky soil, the palomino grape, and the careful ageing of the grape must, all combine to give the world the pleasure of this unique product known the world ever as sherry. Lovingly aged in wine cellars often linked to cathedrals due to their spacious silence.

The production of these wines is protected by the "Official Regulating Body for the Authenticity of Jerez – Xeres – Sherry", as is the production of Brandy by the "Regulating Body for Brandys of Jerez". Both products use the traditional ageing process known as Solera and Criadera. Jerez’s wine cellars are large spacious buildings with high – tiled roofs. They are designed in such a way to keep a constant temperature and humidity in semidarkness, essential conditions for the production of sherry.

Horses

Since very old times, together with Sherry and Flamenco, the horse has been one of the strongest symbols of Jerez. The 15th century was a period of great importance in this long tradition when the Carthusian monks brought the world famous Carthusian horse to Jerez.

Today you can find many equestrian events in which this noble creature can be seen. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art and the Yeguada La Cartuja – Hierro del Bocado have shows on a weekly basis. It could also be of your interest the annual Horse Fair, and many equestrian events that form part of the Autumn Festival.

Culture

Throughout its long history Jerez has been strongly influenced by the different cultures that have settled in its lands, each leaving its mark upon the already deep-rooted traditions of the city. These legacies now form an essential part of life in the city.

The cultures of Phoenician Xera, the strongly Roman Ceret, the important Muslim Sherish all made their presence felt up until Alfonso X, The Wise, took Jerez back from the Moors in 1264 and was responsible for the conversion of the city to Christianity. This melting pot of cultures and knowledge has helped to enhance the artistic heritage of the city.

The old centre, declared to be of Historical Artistic interest, is full of traditional, quaint streets and squares where you can discover secluded, hidden corners mixed in amongst fountains, orange trees, palaces, churches and sherry bodegas.

Nature

Jerez offers a wide range of possibilities when it comes to enjoying the countryside and getting back to nature: be it a leisurely stroll around the city itself or through any of its numerous parks and gardens, the enjoyment of the nearby protected natural areas, parks and reserves of special botanical and ornithological interest, or the opportunity to participate in an endless choice of outdoor activities which take place in the extensive surrounding countryside and nearby hills.

The city abounds with numerous gardens and designated green areas; some of them behind the walls of the sherry wineries themselves, where numerous species of animal and vegetation are to be seen, many of the latter having been brought from South America over a century ago by the winery owners. There are also plentiful areas of wetland around the city where many different species of birds may be observed throughout the year.

The Jerez Zoological and Botanical Garden, created in 1953, is also a very interesting place to be visited, where different zoological and botanical collections of great interest are placed on show to the public, this being one of the most important in all Spain. Of special importance are its conservation, reproduction and reinsertion programmes for those species upon the very verge of extinction, as well as the activities of its Environmental Education Programme.
