Alavera del Pino is a large, recently modernised farmhouse with 4/5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms set around a large traditional Andalucian courtyard. It sleeps 8/9 people in comfort and has its own private pool 8m x 4.5m, which is fully fenced, and terraces with wonderful views.

Why this location? It’s perfect. The house is in a country setting within its own small olive grove and therefore is peaceful, but it is not isolated as there are other houses in the vicinity. It is 1km from the main road to Iznajar and therefore easily accessible to and from everywhere. Malaga and Granada airports less than an hour away.

The house – overview. There is an extendable dining table and a Barbeque in the courtyard, which is amply shaded by a combination of a porch and protective sun sail. The courtyard is enclosed, –like an outside living room- the entrance being a lockable stable door. The Lion room and Casita-suite (which interconnect if required) are accessed directly from the courtyard, together with an additional full bathroom, and there is a door from the courtyard to the rest of the house.

Outside the house/courtyard complex, but next to the house and also accessible from the summer kitchen is a west facing vine-covered terrace with lovely views which also overlooks the pool and its terrace, and an aromatic garden. The pool terrace has some shade and there are lie chairs, upright chairs and small tables which can be moved around to suit you. By the pool there is a hut with a fridge for drinks, and a table tennis table (with fishing net for rescuing balls).

Inside, the house has a downstairs kitchen and larder, and a living room with tv, sofa, and a dining table and chairs for 8. More chairs can be gathered from round the house if required. The kitchen is well equipped as we like to cook. Satellite free to view television and Spanish TV are available.

Upstairs is a good sitting room with tv and video and a wood burning stove for cooler evenings; together with the Orange room with a 5ft bed, the Blue room with 2 single beds beds, and a full bathroom (bath with shower over, bidet, sink and toilet). All the beds are 2m long. In the sitting room there is bookcase with various CDs, DVDs, guide books, reading books and games. The stairs are a little steep but there is a hand rail.

The ground floor Lion room has 2m twin beds which are usually attached together and made up as a double bed, fitted cupboards, and an ensuite shower room with walk-in shower, basin and toilet. There is a lockable interconnecting door to the casita suite. The Casita suite is on two floors with its own staircase and door to the courtyard. It comprises an upstairs bedroom with twin beds (and a great view),a downstairs sitting room with sofa bed, and bathroom with walk-in shower. The bedroom is open plan to the staircase (which is quite steep) and so may not be suitable for your young children.

Comfort: There is central heating to the main house and the lion room, and there are fans to keep cool in the summer. The solar hot water is backed up so that the water is always hot, and the swimming pool is solar heated and can comfortably be used between the beginning of May and the end of October. Cotton sheets and towels are provided.

Food. For essentials there are small food shops, banks, post office etc in Iznajar 10 minutes away. There are also excellent supermarkets within 20 minutes. Loads of places to eat and drink close by, the nearest bar being 1km away.

Good mobile reception at the property.

Notes
What do we do? When you are tired of lying about relaxing, swimming, playing table tennis, or walking and bird watching in the immediate vicinity, there’s still lots to do. The beach at Iznajar is only 10 minutes away where we fly a kite, and there are activities in the summer.

Elsewhere we’ve done riding, golf, tennis, scuba diving, and hiking; others have done theme parks and water parks and the coast; and there is more culture than one holiday can cope with.

Once you have seen Granada and Cordoba, there are still many pretty white towns and villages with plenty of interest, and wonderful views on the way.

Nobody has tried the night club in Iznajar or skiing yet.

Local villages still have their annual fairs with costumes, dancing, music and sometimes horse racing. At Holy week, the week leading up to Easter, Iznajar has a famous Fiesta with many processions accompanied by marching bands. There are many fiestas in towns near by during the year.

More about SUSAN BEHRENS

John and I live in Yorkshire, where John works in the law and I am very involved in National Church Recording for NADFAS, which is a heritage project. We have two grown up children and are just about to have a second grandchild.
We bought El Pino in 2006 and have thoroughly enjoyed the time we have spent there getting to know the culture and people of the area among other things. We hope others will have fun there too, however they spend the time.
