Nerja is the most important town on the eastern Cost del Sol and has
grown rapidly, yet has escaped the excesses of ugly high rise
buildings that disfigfure much of the Costa.
The weather is very sunny and temperate, as Nerja lies on a plain
almost surrounded by the Almijara and Alpujarra Sierras. It is
perfectly possible to ski on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada in the
morning, and sunbathe on the Nerja beaches in the afternoon.
Places To Visit
One of Nerjas many attractions is the Balcon de Europa, an unusual
promenade built on a small peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean,
and offering spectacular views along the rugged coastline. Visiting
Nerja in !885, King Alfonso stood on the peninsula, which had once
been home to a Moorish castle, and christened it "The Balcon de
Europa." Another world famous attraction is the awesome "Cuevas " at
Maro, a village east of Nerja.A theatre has been created within the
caverns and famous performers appear at the festival held there
every July.
Opening times:
July and August 09.30 - 8pm
Rest of year 09.30 - 6.30pm
The white villages of Frigiliana, Torrox Pueblo, Canillas de Albaida
and Competa are all nearby and all worth a visit. All have their
fiestas and Saints days when colourful flamenco dresses are worn.
Semana Santa (Easter) is celebrated in all the towns and villages
with solemn Processions. Malagas Semana Santa celebrations are
world famous.
San Isidro offers a spectacular procession from the centre of Nerja
to Maro on May 15th. There are horse drawn floats and carriages,
magnificient riders on magnificient horses, and the girls and women,
and many men, wear splendid Fiesta outfits.
San Juan, on June 23rd, is celebrated on the beach, when camping
restrictions are lifted for the night, and all the world and his
wife seem to be there, lighting the traditional bonfires,
barbecuing, watching the fireworks and merry making until the wee
small hours.
The 16th July is the Dia del Virgen Carmen, the fishermens Saint.
The statue from the Church of St. Salvador is carried by boat from
one of the beaches to the Balcon, and back to the Church. there is a
short service, then everyone celebrates.
