Set on flat terrain, fairly good paving and low-rise apartments, Roquetas de Mar is ideal for families with younger children, and mature holidaymakers. The town has used traditional Spanish architecture as its blueprint, creating an artificial, yet quaint village atmosphere. Unlike Mojacar, the old village of Roquetas hasn't quite embraced tourism and remains pretty much in a world of its own. There are villas scattered along the sea front, alongside some of the hotels and bars. A pedestrian promenade offers pleasant strolls.
The beach is a mix of sand and coarse sand with rows of sunbeds and parasols - such a large expanse it rarely appears crowded. The wind can sometimes whip up some strong tides in the area so a flag system operates. Water-sports are available in the summer months if conditions favour them. In the summer months it's wise to avoid the beach in the afternoons; the sun is extremely strong here - have a late, long, leisurely lunch instead.
Days Out:
Golfers are in luck - there's an 18 hole course in Roquetas and another close by in Enix. There are also others further afield. Granada offers guided tours of the Alhambra Palace as well as good shopping opportunities and movie lovers will enjoy a trip to Tabernas where the famous spaghetti westerns, amongst others, were filmed.
Nights Out:
Plenty of quiet bars and a good selection of restuarants catering for all tastes ranging from quick snacks to local specialties. There's also a couple of discos and nightclubs; but don't expect a wild time.
For the Kids:
There's plenty of space on the beach for children to runabout although the sea conditions must be watched. Roquetas has a water-park and go-kart track, open in summer months, and an indoor roller-blade area. Beyond the resort, near Tabernas, there is mini-Hollywood or Oasys as it's now called; a pseudo-Western film set with a small zoo and occasional entertainment. A little further on and a couple of miles of dirt track brings you to Texas-Hollywood. This is a real film set from the Spaghetti Western era. There's a fully functioning saloon, complete with the occasional gunfight, and a restaurant.
