Salares is a small white Andalusian village with Moorish origins. The Moors built a small fortress in the village, of which one of the towers remains, near the church, forming part of the house called Del Torreón. The church is built on the site of an arab mosque and the tower, decorated with mudejar motifs, was once the minaret. Salares is an excellent location for discovering this beautiful area and a perfect centre for walks of all levels and difficulties. Dar al Jebana is an ideal house for walkers, for anyone who wants to enjoy life in a picturesque pueblo or for those who want a base to see more of Malaga Province and beyond into inland Andalucia.

The village has three bars & restaurants and a well stocked village shop. Salares has a public swimming pool, open in July and August, with a pool for adults and a pool for children. Two buses per day serve the village from Malaga although a car is recommended. There is a village internet facility, the Guadalinfo, which is free for use of villagers and guests.

When the owners reformed the house, they wanted to reflect this Moorish heritage in the decoration. They brought many artefacts back from Morocco including a large old butter jar. The Arabic name for a butter jar is a Jebana hence the name of the house “Dar el Jebana”.

On the ground floor is the entrance room with storage for coats, shoes and walking equipment and a cloakroom with handbasin and W.C. Originally this would have been used as a home for a mule or for making the local wine. On the first floor is a bright, cheerful and well equipped kitchen with gas hob, electric cooker, fridge and washing machine. Leading from the kitchen is the living room with colourful rugs, paintings and pottery. The living room has table and four chairs and comfortable seating for four and a wood burning stove, Radio/cassette/cd player, Portable gas heater. The second floor has a generous double bedroom and an attractive shower room with handbasin and W.C. The third floor has a berber style sitting room with television which receives Spanish stations and plays D.V.D.s plus a selection of DVDs. The double doors with a small balcony look out onto a beautiful view of the National Park. Next to this is the twin bedded room, again with a berber feel from the hangings and blankets. Stairs lead up from this room to the shaded roof terrace which has a wonderful panoramic views of the mountains and the village – a truly beautiful place to have drinks, meals, barbeques or just to relax on the loungers.

The nearest larger village is Sedella, 5 minutes drive. Both Salares and Sedella have shops, bars and restaurants, doctor's surgeries and pharmacies.

The more well known white village of Competa is 30 minutes away. Competa has a greater range of restaurants, bars, shops and banks and petrol station.

Activities - Guided quad-biking is available in Sedella. These can be trips of a few hours or all day, with food and drink provided. Pony trekking is available near Competa. The walking opportunities are outstanding and maps and walking routes are provided. The best time to walk is Spring or Autumn.

Beach - Torre del Mar is the nearest resort, about 45 minutes away. This is an attractive resort, popular with Spanish families, with a well planned beach-front with plenty of chiringuitos for food and drink. Nerja is a more well known resort, with many renowned bays and famous caves and is about an hours drive away

This area of east of Malaga is known as the Axarquia and is full of many delightful towns and villages to visit and fabulous scenic drives either inland to "hidden Spain" or along the Mediterranean coast.

A 30 minute drive down the mountain is the lovely historic town of Velez-Malaga with its moorish ruined fort surrounded by the ancient Arab quarter.

For those with more modern interests, 1 mile away at Torre del Mar, is el Engenio centre, a shopping centre with hypermarket for food, shops for fashion, jewellery, cinemas and bowling. There is also an aquatic park - Aquavelis. Torre del Mar's sea front is particularly lively at night during the summer with Spanish families and tourists enjoying the warm nights, late night shopping and restaurants and bars. Lovers of sea-food are well catered for.

Nerja, 50 minutes way to the east, once a Spanish fishing village is now an attractive bustling resort. Nerja is popular with British and other northern Europeans and has a wide range of bars and restaurants. There are a number of attractive coves and beaches, shops and boutiques.

Malaga city, about an hour's drive away, has a thriving night-life, ancient monuments and museums and the famous Picasso Museum. Granada with the magnificent Alhambra Palace is about two hours away. Cordoba and its famous Mezquita is two and a half hours away and is quite possible for a day excursion.

If you visit this area for a week there is so much to do and see you will wish you had stayed for a fortnight.

The visitors' pack provides information many of these activities, on bars and restaurants, shopping, excursions, beaches and walks.

Please note this house is not suitable for young children or for elderly of reduced mobility.
