Description: |
Cortijo Juliana - An Andalucian Hideaway Cortijo Juliana is a traditional, 200 year old farmhouse, that has recently been tastefully modernised and furnished. The cortijo ( meaning farmhouse, and pronounced cor teeko ) was one of the original farmhouses in the valley , and it was from here that the workers collected their wages for tending the olives and grapevines. The house is approached along a level track lined with olive and avocado trees, approximately 300 meters long, just off the Competa ( 5km) – Torrox ( 10 km) road, with an ample parking and turning area. The accommodation inside the cortijo consists of, on the lower floor, a sitting room with original open fireplace, leading through to another sitting or reading room. Off this room to the left is a downstairs toilet and shower room, and to the right a very large farmhouse kitchen and dining room. Upstairs, there are 3 bedrooms, a double and 2 twins, and 2 more bathrooms. There is also a roof terrace over part of the house. The farmhouse is built into the slope of the hill, and this allows access to the upper floor from outside, ideal for people who find stairs difficult. Outside there is a private swimming pool ( 8m X 4m ) and sun terracing. There is also a shady terrace directly outside the front door, the floor of which is original, and made of the old style cobbled terracing found throughout Andalucia. Cortijo Juliana is a wonderful old house, with stunning views over the valley and mountains, and is the ideal base to enjoy your holiday. The cortijo is owned by Steve and Val Bowen, owners of Competa Holidays.
Competa Village
The village of Competa is set at the foot of the Sierra Almijara, the snow capped range of mountains between Malaga & Granada, that stretch down to the warm Mediterranean.
Competa, dating back to the Moors, and whose style is reflected in its winding streets and whitewashed houses, has many excellent restaurants and bars and the local inhabitants are content to sit in the central square, drink coffee and wish the stranger, Buenos dias!
The village six hundred and fifty metres above sea level and from its flower bedecked streets and plazas there are spectacular views of sea, countryside and mountains. It is still an active and hard working agricultural town which makes an important contribution to the industry of the province with abundant crops of olives, almonds, grapes, raisins, figs and, above all, its famous wine, Vino de Cómpeta, which is renowned worldwide. In recent years a variety of tropical fruit has been successfully cultivated here. Mango, chirimoya and avocado plantations thrive on the sheltered slopes around Cómpeta. The Sierras lie to the north, snowcapped in winter, the wide blue expanse of the Mediterranean to the south. If an earthly paradise could exist the Axarquia would have to be its name.
This tranquil village is still, as of old, welcoming and assimilating those weary travellers who are seeking a less stressful lifestyle in one of the best climates in the Europe. It weaves its magic gently and the "mañana" philosophy, anathema to those impatient ones who seek instant gratification, slowly soothes and relaxes the tension of other, more demanding lifestyles.
