Further information about the area:

L’Ampolla which is a quaint fishing village on the edge of the Ebro Delta, a destination which has been a favourite with mainland Europeans for over four decades; they are attracted by its quiet charm, sandy beaches, mountain backdrops and the delta. In fact the delta is a nature reserve protected by UNESCO and is famous as a birdwatchers paradise. L'Ampolla itself is has an elegant charm given by the harbour and maritime boardwalk and a relaxed pace of life. It is known through-out Catalunya for its sea-food and the Marina is dotted liberally with cafes and restaurants. Facilities in the village include a large municipal swimming pool, with the mountains as back-drop, tennis facilities, a summer season night-club and lots of sandy beaches where beach volley ball and sun tans are the order of the day. L’Ampolla also has a busy schedule of events over the Summer and Autumn with music concerts, festivals and special events. You can check it all out on the village web site on http:///eng/

The site is in five languages. Worth a mention is the gypsy market every Wednesday morning where you can find anything from a conga drum to an Arabic tapestry to smoked traditional hams and country olives. It is well worth a potter around for the noise and the bustle and the views of the blue Mediterranean stretching into the horizon. Also worth a mention is the summer camp for kids every day during the summer from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. At just five euros a day, its great value and offers the possibility of having the kids entertained for a few hours as mom and dad take some time out. From Les Oliveres/Cap Roig resort, L’Ampolla is a thirty minute walk by the coastline on the GR9.2 (a way-marked walk that begins in the Pyrinees and goes all the way down the coast and to Valencia) The walk winds its way past hidden coves and beaches, along cliff-tops as the turquoise Mediterranean glitters in the sunshine. Its certainly an idea to ear-mark one morning for this mini-hike into the village as it is truly an invigorating and scenic way to build an appetite before lunch in one of L’Ampolla’s many restaurants.

The nearest big town is Tortosa, a old town on the banks of the Ebro river; lest we forget, we should begin with one notable annual event that will simply take your breath away. The Renaissance Festival of Tortosa takes place in the last fortnight in July when groups from all over Europe descend on the town and literally convert it into a Medieval village. There is spectacle and fun, stage shows and sword play, eating and drinking in food halls based on bygone times, thrilling theatre and fireworks to light up the imagination. So if you are lucky enough to be holidaying with Catalan Ways in July, you simply have to visit Tortosa and revel in the spectacle and drama of this unique event. On a less dramatic note, Tortosa is the capital of the delta, a mid-sized town on the Ebro river. It is of striking beauty, dominated as it is by the Parador or old castle that overlooks the town and the river. It has a wonderful park with a huge avenue of Maple trees and of course, the customary playground. The magnificently restored old style food market is a throw-back in time where the scent of seasonal fruits and olives, traditional meats and strong coffee blend in the air. It is open in the mornings from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is well worth a visit as it has not changed in character since the turn of the last century. A visit to the Parador hotel is also recommended as it offers splendid panoramic views of the city, the Ebro and the ‘Els Ports’ mountain range which rise from the great floodplain in the distance. Have a walk around the garden and battlements, order a coffee in the Parador bar and soak in a different world.

Just one and a half hours away is Barcelona, the capital of Catalunya, one of the most avant-garde cultural and artistic centers of Spain. You can take the train from L'Ampolla early in the morning and be in the center of this metropolis in less than one and a half hours; there you can discover the brilliant idiosyncratic art and architecture of Antoni Gaudi while walking through Parc Guell, an urban oasis full of whimsical buildings and colorful mosaic images of Alice in Wonderland creatures. Take a break from shopping in the L'Eixample district and visit Casa Batllo and Casa Mila, apartment blocks designed by Gaudi, whose nautilus spiral staircases and sea-shell inspired outdoor spaces suggest Captain Nemo was the architect. And you can not visit Barcelona without going to La Sagrada Familia, the unfinished cathedral of Gaudí whose 300 meters high 'Smartie' towers give the city's skyline a surrealistic birthday cake look. And whether you're strolling among the street musicians and artists of La Rambla (where some of the streetlamps hung over Gaudi's flamboyant stamp) or tapas in the shadow of the big cathedral, you'll realize that in Barcelona, strange and wonderful things are everywhere. It is only one of those cities that never ceases to surprise. It really makes for a wonderful day excursion away from the beach and the Mediterranean.

Cold pool

We enjoyed our stay very much apart from the pool not being heated on arrival (the advertise of the house said it would be) We asked for it to be turned on and Catalan ways fixed it the same evening. However the pool cover did not work so we could’t close it at night as Catalan ways told us to do to keep the pool warm during the colder nights. Someone was supposed to come the next morning but no one did and we did not hear anything from Catalan ways for the rest of our stay. This resulted in a really cold pool in the mornings and early day which we were very unhappy about. We could not use the pool as much as we would have liked. Most of us(5 adults, 2 children) also thought the beds were to hard. They could use an extra thin mattress on top of the regular one to make it less hard. The built in Coffee machine had old beans in it and we could not use it. These were the things we were dissatisfied with. The good things were that the house was beautiful, the kitchen worked fine for us to cook, all bedrooms were great and bathrooms too. We loved the garden and terrace very much. We also liked the location of the house and the beaches nearby.
Owner comment
Hi Patricia, We are so sorry that the pool temperature was not as high as you wanted.yes there was an issue with the automatic pool cover during your stay. In fact we dropped by the villa to have it repaired but you were not at home. As it turned out, there was a winding spindle that had broken and we needed to order it. I also sent you a message to tell you of this so I am surprised you did not get it. Apologies. But the house is fabulous, the gardens magnificent and when the pool cover is working (as it is again) nice warm water for everyone to enjoy. Adrian

Lovely house and garden

We had a wonderful holiday in the villa that had an amazing pool and garden, where we could enjoy ourselves and relax as we had hoped. The villa is very nice and spacious - so is the garage that holds two cars easily. We could walk down to a stony beach in 5 min and walk over to a lovely sandy beach in 15 min from the back garden. The walk is a tiny bit challenging but that wasn’t a problem for us. The people behind Catalan Ways were extremely helpful and we could feel that we were dealing with real people. We had a problem with some ants, which was taken care of right away. The town is also very nice with good restaurants.
Owner comment
Hi Nanna, The only problem we had was when the gardeners arrived and the dogs were playing on the lawn. Gardeners and large dogs do not mix!!! But yes it is a perfect location for active dog lovers with so many nice walks and nature. Maybe you will be back someday but thank you for that very nice review.
