We were warmly greeted from the owners at the start who were very pleasant and helpful during our stay. The apartment was basic but comfortable. It was a typical town house in a mountain village. The narrow cobbled streets of Competa gave it the charm but you really did need to enjoy walking up and down numerous steps and hills to get out and about anywhere in the village, along with understanding that parking your car would not be near to the house. Even the 3 minute walk to the main square where there were numerous restaurants/bars was quite challenging through the cobbled steep alleyways. We had imagined that with Competa being 18km's inland it would be a very Spanish village with no English spoken. This was not the case, everyone spoke English and in the restaurants, all you could hear was English speaking diners so my vision of coming to an inland Spanish village and hearing and speaking only Spanish did not deliver. We used Competa as a base and went out to nearby Nerja and Torrox on the coast which we thoroughly enjoyed - here there were many Spanish people, and particularly in Torrox no one spoke English at all. We did enjoy our short trip to Spain. The weather was fabulous but we can say that we have visited Competa now, but for us, we preferred the coast and Torrox is the place we will be coming back to.

Owner comment

Thank you for this great review. The moorish influences in Cómpeta are well reflected in the narrow, steep, cobblestone streets and streets with stairs. These streets give this old part of the village a lot of charm and tranquility. When you're looking for this and for beautiful nature Cómpeta will meet your expectations. Cómpeta is closest to the sea of all the towns and villages of the Sierra Tejeda and Sierra Almijara with the exception of Frigiliana (very touristic). Cómpeta is quite popular among Danes, Germans and Brits. Some are only visiting it for a holiday, others decide to stay permanent because they like this mountain village being lively throughout the year (which cannot be said from many coastal towns), the nice weather or because they like its tranquility and being next to the natural park and not too far from the coast. We have to agree many english diners are on the main plaza, Dining from seven till nine or dining itself is not very spanish, We in spain have a big lunch around two, three oçlock. Looking for spanish bars and restaurants try, for example: Marcos, Alfonso, Chicos, Lorenas, Cafe David, Mason Las Gemelas, Venta de Palma.

Had a lovely stay in this wonderful house for a relaxing week.we were met by the owners and were taken to the house and were shown around the property as to how things worked.right from the start of our booking the communication was's s beautiful house with everything you could need should you require it.lovely rooftop terrace overlooking the main square and church of competa.just a short walk and you are in the main part of competa with its excellent restaurants.would not stay anywhere else when we return to this lovely part of spain and can't fault anything whatsoever.don't hesitate if you're looking for accommodation in compete you won't be disappointed .

From the moment we booked Becky and Martin contacted us and put us at ease, very friendly and informative. They met us when we arrived late and helped us with the luggage to the house. The house is perfect for a couple. An authentic village townhouse in a central location, in superb order, very clean and well equipped, we didn't need anything with an idyllic view of the mountains down to the sea from the roof terrace. For us, it was the perfect spot. Competa is an interesting, charming place to walk around and very friendly, you discover something new every time you wander around the maze of small streets and alleyways and has ample bars and a variety of good restaurants for a small village. If you hire a car (cheap, around £10 a day) then there is loads of places to visit, a short drive to numerous great beaches, some busy, some more remote and less crowded with many other places and villages to discover in the countryside. A bit farther afield but still easily accessible is Malaga and Granada. If you don't hire a car the bus links are great to the main beaches on the coast and Malaga. Can't think of anything negative really!
