Spain's budget destinations: where to go for under €500 per week

Budget dining on the Costa del Sol

Great news for Spanish tourism. Earlier this year, the British Post Office ‘Travel Money’ service published its annual survey Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer and Spain is back on top as the Number One destination for budget holidays! Spain tied first place with Sri Lanka, beating 40 destinations to regain their title.

The annual barometer monitors the cost of eight typical tourist purchases: a cup of coffee, bottle of local beer, a bottle/can of Coca-Cola/Pepsi, a glass of wine, a 1.5 litre bottle of mineral water, suncream, a pack of 20 Marlboro Lights cigarettes and a three-course evening meal for 2 adults (including a bottle of house wine).

The survey was carried out on the Costa del Sol, where the items totalled £36.14 (€42.38), compared to £52.89 (€61.99) in Marmaris, Turkey; £63.08 (€73.94) in Pula, Croatia; £87.06 (€102.04) in Sorrento, Italy, and a whopping £145.28 (€170.27) in Australia, four times higher than the cost of the same items in Spain.

The results also demonstrate a 50% decrease in the cost of dining out in Spain, compared to five years ago. An average meal for two costs just £22.32 (€25) in Spain, compared to the most expensive location in the survey, Seoul in South Korea, where a meal for two could set you back a tidy £122.45 (€140).
