Two new Natural Monuments declared in Andalusia

The Tajo Gorge Ronda

Ronda's world famous Tajo gorge has finally got the attention it deserves. Following intense petitioning from Ronda's townhall, who have been trying for years to get the Consejo Provincial de Medio Ambiente to add the Tajo Gorge to Andalusia's list of protected natural monuments, its wish was finally realised yesterday.

The protected Natural Monument status will give the Gorge added protection, help with any local funding that is required and attract tourism.

Insider tip - to fully appreciate the gorge, a walk in it is recommended. The views of Ronda's Puente Nuevo are unbeatable and there are some fantastic little paths that cut across the surrounding countryside and down to the Guadalevín river. For the more adventurous, there are a couple of Via Ferrata routes that go up the Tajo.

Getting there is straightforward, walk back across the Puente Nuevo towards the city walls - away from the centre. You'll come to a roundabout, take a sharp right (almost doubling back on yourself). The road quickly becomes a track and drops down steeply. There are a couple of designated parking areas at the bottom with clearly defined tracks leading off into the surrounding countryside.

Cueva del Gato - Ronda

The Cueva del Gato - the Cat's cave - is situated in the nearby village of Benaoján. The Cueva del Gato is one of the most unique cave complexes in Andalusia and has now been officially recognised as such. Along with the Tajo, it was added to the list of Natural Monuments.

The 8kms long cave complex starts in Hundidero and ends in Cueva del Gato. Ending in some spectacular river pools and provides a unique place for a picnic. A great place to stop off after a morning's sightseeing in Ronda.
