It lies within Nerja's municipal boundaries, giving access to some of the region's most spectacular beaches such as Maro beach (La Cala de Maro) and La Caleta de Maro. These beaches are framed by cliffs and scenic agricultural lands, with protected natural areas preserving the local marine and terrestrial ecosystem for visitors to appreciate.

Natural areas and neighbouring attractions

To the east and south, the Los Acantilados de Maro - Cerro Gordo Natural Area boasts dramatic cliffs, sea caves and coves renowned for their biodiversity and beauty. The village itself retains an authentic Andalusian atmosphere, perfect for leisurely exploring local eateries and shops. Activities for all types of travellers

Family-friendly snorkeling and wildlife observation

Essential travel tips for your holiday in Maro

How to get there and parking advice

  1. Plan your trip via the N-340 old coastal road
  2. Prepare for limited and sometimes crowded parking in summer months
  3. Bring essentials for secluded coves with no facilities
  4. Book holiday rentals early to secure preferred locations
  5. Explore local organic farms and enjoy fresh produce

1. Plan your trip via the N-340 old coastal road

Approach Maro via the old N-340 coastal road, taking the exit for Maro and driving through the village. A sharp right turn near a roundabout leads to the beach access road, winding past farms with scenic views of organic agriculture and the Mediterranean coves.

2. Prepare for limited and sometimes crowded parking in summer months

Parking near Maro beach is normally manageable but expect more difficulty during peak summer weekends. There may be attendants seeking a small contribution. For a quieter visit, consider the lesser-known La Caleta de Maro cove, which offers more seclusion but more challenging access and no formal parking facilities.

3. Bring essentials for secluded coves with no facilities

Be prepared when visiting smaller coves like La Caleta de Maro, which lacks onsite services. Bring water, snacks, and sun protection. Enjoy the natural environment responsibly and take all your belongings back with you.

4. Book holiday rentals early to secure preferred locations

Given the popularity of Maro and nearby Nerja, it is recommended to book your holiday home well in advance, especially for summer months, to reserve properties with your desired amenities such as pools, terraces, or proximity to the beach.

5. Explore local organic farms and enjoy fresh produce

Maro is renowned for its organic agriculture. Take the opportunity to explore local farms and markets to savour fresh, seasonal produce during your holiday, adding a delightful local flavour to your stay.
