Barcelona

Spain’s second largest and definitely most cosmopolitan city, and one of the Mediterranean’s busiest ports. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, which is a region of Spain with its own language – Catalan, and it’s own culture and
character.

Barcelona offers the best of both worlds, situated on the Costa Brava on the Spanish Mediterranean coast, the city gently rises up from the coastline
through the city and up into a range of wooded hills.

Famous for breaking ground art, architecture and avant-garde chefs; the city eclipses many other for its creativity and forward thinking.

History
There are two legends that surround the history of Barcelona; one attributes the founding of the city to the mythological Hercules, 400 years before Rome. The second attributes the founding of the city in the 3rd century BC to the Carthaginian ruler Hamilcar Barca, the father of Hannibal.

The Romans took the town over as a military camp, but at the time the city was eclipsed by its neighbour Tarragona. There are some important Roman ruins that were exposed a few years ago under the Placa del Rei (Kings Plaza).

The city was then invaded and occupied by the Moors and later conquered by the Counts of Barcelona.

During the Franco years the region of Catalonia was extremely suppressed with the Catalan language and Catalonian institutions abolished.

The City
Barcelona is a dynamic, open Mediterranean city. It’s the perfect city to relax, stroll around and enjoy its unique way of life.

Barcelona offers so much to the cultural visitor, there is so much to see, something new and interesting awaits around every corner: Gothic architecture, the famous Las Ramblas avenue, Gaudi’s Güel Parc and the unfinished La Sagrada
Cathedral, the old Raval quarter, La Ribera and La Barceloneta, a beachside ravel of corridor style streets where you can find some fantastic local
restaurants and bars, away from the typical tourist area.

Getting around Barcelona is easy. You can pretty much walk around the whole city. They also have a daily rent-a-bike system and the Metro is very good and simple to use.

Places to visit
Barcelona is known throughout the world as a cultural city with considerable heritage and a permanent, dynamic offer, a rich architectural and monumental heritage with works that have been declared part of the world heritage by the UNESCO.

Barcelona is Gaudi, or Gaudi is Barcelona. His distinctive architectural style is admired around the world and his gothic creations have greatly influenced the overall character of the
city. His most notable works are the iconic temple Sagrada Familia, the beautiful Park Guëll and the Casa Batlló.

La Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria (La Boqueria market) is described as being amongst the best markets in Europe and La Boqueria isn’t simply about buying; in fact the most pleasurable
thing about visiting the market is just wandering around and taking in the sights, sounds, smells and chatter.

Las Ramblas has always been top of the tourist attraction list for Barcelona. A principal street of 1.2km in the centre of the city, with a tree-lined pedestrian mall, which separates the Gothic and El Raval quarters and connects the Plaça (Plaza) Catalunya and the Christopher Columbus monument at Port Vell.

El Barrio Gótico or Gothic Quarter, known in Catalan as Barri Gótic, is the Medieval centre of the city; with its charming labyrinth of small, narrow streets and alleys, brimming with dealers and merchants of all kinds, its an absolute gem to explore when you are in Barcelona.

Barcelona is a city with a beach. Not many of Europe’s top city destinations can boast a beach. But Barcelona, situated on the Mediterranean Costa Brava, is one of them.

With four main beach areas and over 4 kilometres of golden sandy beaches stretching either side of the city, Barcelona provides the perfect mix for a cultural city and beach holiday.

Cuisine
Gastronomy has become one of the key dynamos for Catalonian economy in the past few years, with some of the world’s best restaurants and top chefs, such as Ferràn Adrià, Santi Santamaría,
Fermí Puig, Carles Gaig, Carme Ruscalleda and Sergi Arola, all native of and working in the region.

The cuisine is a dynamic mix of traditional and modern exploratory dishes; the city of Barcelona itself has more than 600 years of gastronomy culture and ranks along with Gaudi, its gothic inheritance, the Born archaeological finds and the art influences of Miró and Picasso, as the main incentives for tourism in the city.

Barcelona’s gastronomy has influences from many different cultures who have lived in or conquered the city over the centuries: Italian, French, Greek, Provençal, Arab and Jewish.

Fresh and local produce is always preferred and if you are preparing a meal at home then you must visit La Boqueria Market, an institution in Barcelona, where you can buy all the freshest local ingredients to prepare a typical Catalonian dish.

Specialities include the iconic stew Escudella i carn d’olla, Canelons a la Catalana (literally
Cannelloni Catalan style), for breakfast Pa Amb Tomàquet, which is bread (toasting is optional) with tomato rubbed over it and seasoned with olive oil and salt,  and for dessert the famous Crema Catalana.

Climate
In keeping with its geographical diversity, there are numerous climates and micro climates, depending on the altitude and the proximity of the sea. In general, the area enjoys a mild temperate and Mediterranean type climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters.

Wonderful city! Would recommend to anyone. Lots of museums and galleries - recommend the "Refugi" - an air raid shelter from the civil war, if you are interested in history of that very dark time for Barcelona - get a ticket for the Museum of the History of Barcelona in the centre of the city for about 7 euros and it gives you admission to about 10 or 12 sites across the city - actual Roman buildings under the old city, the whole period from then to now- you have up to a year to see them all and it includes the Refugi (sorry forgot, its usually only Spanish or Catalan language tours but there are information boards in English and I understood a lot of it with my very minimal Spanish). Picasso museum good apparently and free on Sundays from 4pm but long queues then (20-30 min wait). We thought most of the Gaudi stuff a bit over the top, esp the "Sagrada Familia" but some people like that, and we enjoyed Parc Guell, especially for the views of the city. Joan Miro gallery also approved by my family culture vultures. Also lovely churches, cafes, bars and amazing food markets, esp La Bocqueria just off the Ramblas - cheap and wonderful and fun to practice even very basic Spanish - they don't mind at all! The old city (Barri Gotic) is great just for wandering around.

Coast review

Barcelona city beach was not great. We had a day trip to Sitges which is a nice old town and the beaches were nice, though the sun was not kind to us and went away soon after we arrived. Sitges is a short (30 min) easy train ride for only 3 euros or so and worth a visit - there is a nice little art gallery too. Other than that we cant really comment on the Costa Brava as we were on a city holiday mostly.

an exciting and beautiful city-one has to be extremely vigilant for pickpockets and other.I had my chain pulled off my neck in broad daylight. The Police were extremely helpful and kind and courteous(needed their statement for insurance purposes) the apartment staff were also very caring and called to make sure all was well.
