Salobrena

The picture postcard village of Salobrena is situated on the Costa Tropical in the Andalusian province of Granada; it’s known as the ‘jewel of the Costa Tropical’, the village is ideally located, on the beach, in a wonderful sunny climate, yet just 45 minutes from the historical city of Granada, and the skiing resort of the Sierra Nevada. You can literally mix a ski and beach holiday.

With the Mediterranean sea at your feet and the snowy mountains of the Sierra Nevada to your back, you couldn’t wish for a better combination, Salobrena is a delightful place to visit any time of the year.

History
The history of town dates back over 6000 years, it’s privileged location and climate has attracted settlers from very early on.

Cultural attractions
There is a Moorish castle in the town, which dates back to the 10th century, and which affords some magnificent views around the area. There is also a Mudejar-style 16th century church. There have been several sites excavated in the local area with
Roman remains.

A visit to the museum, within the municipal library, will tell you more about the history of Salobrena. With the help of model and visual aids, the museum tells how Salobrena was once
practically an island, before the river gradually deposited its sediment to form the rich delta that along with the climate explains the abundance of crops such as sugar cane.

About town
The centre of Salobrena, which is built on an impressive rock, is a maze of whitewashed houses, which fall into the districts of Brocal, Albaycín, La Fuente and La Loma. Exploring the town is a lovely way to pass a day; don’t take a map, just head in the direction that takes your fancy, you’ll find charming interesting spots all of town. Plus you can only really go up or down in Salobrena!

Beaches

The beautiful, wide sandy beach at Salobrena is split in two by Penon rock. The beach is a short walk from the town, but is home to several “chiringuitos” (beach restaraunts).

Outdoor pursuits
If you enjoy an active holiday, then you will love Salobrena. The excellent combination of coast and
countryside, offers a host of options when it comes to outdoor pursuits: hiking, rambling, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, water sports, golf, tennis, fishing and sailing, amongst many others.

Festivals

The week of Semana Santa (Holy Week) is worth experiencing in Salobrena. From the 24th to the 29th of June the town celebrates their San Juan and San Pedro Fair, which is followed in October by the festival in honour of the Virgin of the
Rosario, the patron of Salobrena.

The summer season attracts many concerts and shows to Salobrena, many of which take place in the evening in the spectacular setting of the Arabic castle. One of these events not to be missed is the “Lucero del Alba” flamenco festival,
when the historic castle turns into a romantic setting for a delightful display of traditional music and dancing.

Eating out

Salobrena enjoys a lively cultural and social scene and there are some excellent tapas bars and restaurants around town. Enjoy a free 'tapa' with every drink you order, and then you don’t have to buy lunch!

Climate
The Costa Tropical takes its name from the sub-tropical climate that it enjoys. With warm winters and long hot summers, the average temperature is around 20C.

The City Salobrena we used to do our shopping and drink our morning coffee. It is a nice small village, but for real exploring the area you need to explore outside of this area

We are not really beach people but we found the local beaches very nice and went for many walks along them stopping off for drinks quite regularly and just soaking up the atmosphere

City review

An unexpected delight - small enough for us to walk everywhere but buzzing with life. Other visitors seemed to be either Spanish, Scandinavian or Dutch, and a good mixture of families, couples and singles. The bars and restaurants were without exception friendly and clean, and we returned to our favourites several times. We especially enjoyed spending days on the beach and evenings wandering about the steep and winding streets, looking at quiet courtyards and bright flowers. The view from the Moorish castle in the old town is wonderful.

Coast review

Aside from a couple of days when we shared the sea with some jellyfish, the sandy beach and seaside were lovely. There were good beachside cafes and stalls where sunbeds and parasols were available to hire. It was obviously a popular place for Spanish family holidays - which seemed to us to be the perfect recommendation!

We were out walking and looked at the exiting wiew from the top of the castle. Salobrena is a very special and charming town with the white houses. Otherwise, the people (and dogs) are living their own life. We met many nice, helpful people in the shops. Salobrena is a central town for us who want to take a trip to Granada and also Los Moriscos to play golf.

Coast review

We have been there earlier, and for this reason we come back to this place.

Salobrena is a small town. Nice restaurants, some on the mountainside with great views. But, I wouldn't call this really fine dining. More casual Tapas style.

Coast review

Great views from the mountainiside where we stayed. But, the water at the beach was very cold.

Salobrena is a little city with a nice old town and some cute beaches. Also it offers a lot of nice restaurants to eat fish. However it is a really small city which might get boring from time to time.

Coast review

The coast is usually very touristy. We stayed there in the first week of October so it was kinda empty even though we had perfect weather. The ocean is usually very clear and we never had problems with trash or anything in the water.

The villa is situated 6km from Salobrena, in small community. So everything you need to buy can be bought only in town. The town itself is nothing special, but have good beach and castle.

Coast review

Cold water and jellyfish are not the best you can experience in Spain, but there are less people around.

Salobrena has a family-friendly town and beach with many cafes and restaurants to serve all food tastes and a rock promontory that's fun to climb and from which you can jump into the sea!

Coast review

Costa Tropical provides sun and relaxation with beautiful views of the sea. It also allows for each day trips to many historical cities such as Granada, Malaga, Cordoba and Seville. The blend of Moorish and Spanish influences makes the architecture gorgeous!
