Local events in Torrevieja

There are numerous local and national events that are held throughout the year in Torrevieja. Some celebrations are of religious origin, others of a more cultural and historical one. Here are some of the biggest ones. 

Places of interest

The Immaculate Conception Plaza de la Constitución s/n, 03181 Torrevieja
The patron saint of Torrevieja is the Virgin of the Inmaculate Conception. The religious festival is celebrated the first week in the December, generally from the 1st of December to the 8th. The week long celebrations include all sorts of events including numerous parades, religious ceremonies, flower offerings, concerts, shows, a paella competition and, of course, fireworks.

Torrevieja's Salt Queen elections Plaza Miguel Hernandez s/n, 03181 Torrevieja
Salt has played an important part in Torrevieja's history. So much so, that a salt queen is elected during the week-long festivities in honour of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. The salt queen is chosen for her beauty and is said to be the most beautiful woman in Torrevieja.
Virgen del Carmen Paseo Vista Alegre, 03181 Torrevieja
The Virgen del Carmen is celebrated on the 16th of July every year. There are bands playing music from 7am onwards. The procession follows the same route every year, starting in the Plaza de la Constitución, then onto the Calle Concepción, Paseo Vista Alegre and onto the port area. Where a waiting boat takes the Virgin out to sea. There are huge firework displays, lots of music and fun to be had. The Virgin is eventually returned to the Inmaculada church.
San Juan - Saint John's night Paseo Juan Aparicio, Torrevieja
San Juan (the night of Saint John) is a huge celebration across the whole of Spain and Torrevieja is no exception. Taking place on the night of June 23rd, San Juan is one big beach party with bonfires, fireworks and celebrations that take place all night. There's a traditional 'cleansing of sins' taking place at midnight, with people jumping over the bonfires and washing their sins away in the sea. Not to be missed. The Paseo Juan Aparicio and the local beaches are the places to be.
Virgen del Rocio of Torrevieja Avenida del Puerto, Torrevieja
Torrevieja pays homage to the Virgin del Rocio during a few days in June. A religious holiday where pilgrims gathers for mass, followed by a procession to San Roque church, all accompanied by plenty of music and singing.
Mayo fair Avenida del Puerto, Torrevieja
The Torrevieja May Fair is a show with an important Andalucian twist, plenty of flamenco, dancing and horses. Loosely styled after the April Fair in Seville, this popular event lasts for five days. The fair takes place around the Port area.
