Banyoles

The busy town of Banyoles is located in the province of Girona, in a regional called Pla de l’Estany, at the northeastern corner of Catalonia.

The town is situated inland, half way between the Costa Brava and the Girona Pyrenees. The surrounding landscape is strikingly beautiful and it is situated 2 kilometres away from the famous Banyole Lake; an area of protected space, and high ecological value.

History
The town features buildings, which date back to the 12th century, and records show that the area
dates back further, built around a Benedictine monastery.

About town
Banyoles is a bustling town with lots of activity and life. It has excellent amenities and provides for all needs: supermarkets, shops, bars, restaurants, cultural attractions and outdoor
activities.

Many of the buildings date back to the 12th century and give the town an ancient look, but the
people of Banyoles are energetic and entertaining and breath life through the city.

Cultural attractions
The Archaeology Museum Comarcal Banyoles is an interesting visit, with pre-Neanderthal remains. Three kilometres out of town you find the Sarinya Caves, where 30,000 objects have been excavated, showing evidence of habitation dating back hundred thousand years.

Natural surroundings
Banyoles and its natural surround are perfect for rural tourists who wish to hike, ramble, climb or
cycle during their holiday. The Estany de Banyoles (Banyoles Lake), situated 2 kilometres from the town was the location for the rowing competition in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, and is now a great place to go swimming, boating and hiking. Together with lake are some small lagoons and marshes, and inflowing rivers.

You can also partake in canoeing, horse-riding, archery and orienteering, it’s a wonderful destination for lovers of outdoor pursuits.

Eating out
There is a good selection of bars and restaurants in Banyoles, mainly traditional Catalonian, but there are also some international alternatives.

Climate
The climate in the region of Pla de l’estany is generally a Mediterranean one, with mild temperatures throughout winter and spring, although it can be very rainy during the autumn
season.
