Costa del Azahar - the ‘Orange Blossom Coast’

To the north of Valencia you find the Costa del Azahar, or Orange Blossom Coast. The area forms part of the provinces of Valencia and Castellón and is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt regions of Spain. Not only offering great beaches but beautiful towns and countryside.

The area is still relatively unspoilt when it comes to tourism, compared to its neighbouring Costa Blanca, but offers no less amenities, facilities and attractions. The nearest airport is at Valencia.

Places to visit
The town of Peniscola with its great medieval castle and Oropesa, which conserves the 16th century Tower of the King, erected as a defense against pirates. The enchanting town of Morella
is a true pearl, with its narrow lanes, enclosed by 14th century walls.

The attractive seaside town of Benicassim, with its Moorish feel is worth a visit, and is now famous for being the site for the annual FIB International Music Festival. Aside from this it is historically interesting with its 10th century Moorish castle.

Natural surroundings
The countryside of the Costa del Azahar is breathtaking, filled with orange and lemon groves, protected parks and nature reserves; the region offers plenty of scope for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits and rural tourism. Here you can enjoy activities such as hiking, rambling, mountain climbing, rafting, mountain biking, and more.

Beaches
The beaches are unspoilt and don’t get as crowded as those of the Costa Blanca, kilometres of white
sandy, interspersed with hidden coves, perfect for scuba diving enthusiasts.

Cuisine
The local cuisine, like most of Valencia, is largely based on fish and rice dishes. Specialities include
locally caught prawns, sardines and anchovies, as well as the famous Paella and the Tombet del Maestrzgo, which is a delicious soup.

Festivals
San Antonio (17th of January) in Benicassim, Vinarós carnivals, Magdalena (Castellón, March), San Juan (24th of June), Oropesa fiestas (25th of July), Santo Tomás (22nd of September) in Benicassim, 9th of October and Peníscola fiestas (7th to 16th of October).

Climate
The Costa del Azahar enjoys a mild climate, with warm dry summers and temperate winters. Ideal for all year visits.

Peñíscola review

The city is small and easy to get around. the two beach areas are very nice with small playgrounds for the kids and lots of shops/cafes. the old part of the city is beautiful with small narrow streets and restaurants.

Costa del Azahar reviews

Nice shallow water at the south beach and the northern is bigger with waves,

Peñíscola review

Beautiful town with lots to see and huge variety of places to eat. The old town in particular is amazing and the views from the castle are worth the walk - plenty of places to stop and have a rest and a drink/tapa on the way up. Two beaches were great.

Vinarós review

Village was beyond expectation at night. All kinds of events where organised in august, but not to busy to enjoy it.

Costa del Azahar reviews

We went to the beach in (almost)the backyard. It was rocky and realy quiet during the day. A few people are visiting this beach and almost everyone who does, brings their dog along. (We haven't got a dog, but it didn't bother us at all)

Nice little town, with lovely Castle of Papa Luna. Fantastic beaches in the city, but also the possibility to visit the beautiful beaches in Sierra D'Irta Natural Park where you can be alone.

Vinarós review

Vinaros is fun to visit. There are charming restaurants and friendly people. Families stroll down the boulevard which is by the Mediterranean and couples sit outside restaurants with their Sangria. In this warm sunny town

Peñíscola review

Beautiful castle, nice restaurants and craftshops. Negative aspects: ugly buildings and too many next to both beaches. Not a lot of nature in the town. There are very less trees and no parks. Too crowded beaches in August, very difficult to find a parking place.

Costa del Azahar reviews

Crowded, not preserved as it should be. Interesting spots are most in the interior.

Vinarós review

Viñaroz was a good 20 minute drive from the complex, and whilst it had good facilities and services, the beach was very crowded in August, and the road system was confusing.

Costa del Azahar reviews

The coast itself was clean, but the beaches are mainly shingle & stones.

Benicarló review

Benicarlo is a wonderful Spanish city , it's great that they are very near the beach . Great accomodation aay from the hustle and bustle of the other overfull regions. Food delights and hidden shopping treasures. Parking can get extremely tricky and I think it's because they are becomming well known.
