Isla Canela Golf

The natural island resort of Isla Canela is home to its own golf course. Isla Canela itself is joined by a bridge to Ayamonte (Huelva). The resort is located on the Costa de la Luz, in the province of Huelva, between the Andalusian Atlantic and the Portuguese Algarve.

If you are a golf enthusiast then this region is a great alternative to the more expensive Costa del Sol courses. The green fees are lower, the courses are less crowded and less busy making it much easier to get a start time that you want and be able to get round in reasonable time.

The course
Isla Canela’s own course is set at the edge of the
‘Marismas’, the saltwater marshes that form much of Isla Canela’s terrace, and which have a protected status as natural parks.

The course at Isla Canela is flat and open and makes for easy walking – but not for easy scoring! There are many bunkers and water hazards, so bring plenty of spare balls!

At 6,248 metres, the course is not particularly long but it rewards straight play as any shots off line are penalised by the array of eucalyptus and palms that characterise the scenery.

Facilities
Facilities at Isla Canela include a practice course with putting green, a social club with restaurant, golf shop, swimming pool and bowling green.
Apartment guests can play 18 holes at reduced costs.

Nearby courses
The nearest course to Isla Canela is not in Spain, but in Portugal. The Atlantic course at Castro Marim is just over the border and can be reached in 20 minutes.

Despite being so close, Castro Marim could not be more different. Carved in to the rocky hills that lie just inland; the fairways wind and climb in and out of natural valleys and provide stunning views all around.

The 27 hole course at Islantilla, is located just east of Isla Cristina. Opened in 1992, Islantilla has hosted a PGA European Tour event and has been
listed by Golf Digest in Europe’s Top 100 courses.

Further east towards Huelva are the courses of Nuevo Portil and El Rompido. Nuevo Portil is a parkland course set in the middle of a large new
development of houses and villas and El Rompido is the newest of the courses in the area having been opened in 2003. Set on the coast overlooking the estuary of the Rio Piedras River, there are spectacular views to the beaches and the
sea

Climate
The climate in Isla Canela is mainly Mediterranean, with generally hot and dry summers and mild winters.  The area is considered a year round destination.

Isla Canela Golf review

The apartment is in a quiet area close to Ayamonte. Many places to eat delicious andalusian food: El Quitapena, La Vitola, Casa Vicente, La Puerta Ancha, Casa Luciano. You must visit the area of Punta del Moral where you can enjoy fresh seafood and fish. There are some big malls and cinemas in close locations like Islantilla or Lepe. This is also a perfect location for spending the day in Portugal: Tavira and its beaches (Praia Verde & Manta Rota), Valle do Lobo and Villamoura (glamourous!). I recommend a visit to Aracena (1,5 hour drive but worth it!) with the best ham and variety of mushrooms cooked in many different ways. You may also visit one of the biggest caves in Spain during a 50 min tour. On your way back to Isla Canela, you can stop at Rio Tinto - the place in the world with environmental conditions more similar to Mars.
