Jimena de la Frontera

The historic white-washed pueblo of Jimena de la Frontera forms part of the ‘Pueblos Blancos’ (white villages) of the province of Cadiz in Andalusia. The town is situated inland around 35 kilometres from the coast at San Roque.

The surrounding countryside is stunning; the town is situated in the Los Alcornocales Natural Park and is a wonderful rural getaway destination.

History
Jimena de la Frontera is a town, which over the centuries has had a multitude of occupants, many of which are reflected in the town’s wonderful architecture.

From the first Iberian and Phoenician occupations, to the Romans who mined for the rich mineral deposits of the area and the Moors who used the town as both an important strategic military and commercial point.

The town was re-conquered by the Christians and in 1879 was given the status of Ciudad (Town), as it was considered to be a highly important town in the region.

About town
You enter Jimena de la Frontera through a wonderful three-arched gateway, which has been declared of historical and artistic importance. The typical Andalusian town with its narrow, steep cobbled streets and white-washed houses are shadowed by the a Moorish and Roman castle, which on a clear day affords magnificent views down to Gibraltar and Algeciras.

The town has an upbeat feel, and in fact, over the last few years has become home to many ex-pat residents. There are plenty of bars and restaurants, and of course shops and other amenities needed for your stay. Just remember to bring comfortable walking shoes, as the streets are steep and it’s a good 15 minutes from the top to the bottom of the town.

Natural surroundings

Jimena de la Frontera is surrounded by the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty; there are also several game preserves. The landscape is made up of abundant forestland and mountains.

The rural destination is ideal for those looking for an escape away from main tourist areas of the coast and who want to be able to explore the great outdoors.

Places to visit
Jimena de la Frontera is located just 35 kilometres from the coast, where you can visit San Roque and Sotogrande, Gibraltar and Tarifa. The town is also on rail route to Ronda.

Climate

The climate in Jimena de la Frontera is predominantly Mediterranean, with generally hot and dry summers and fairly mild winters.
