L’Ametlla de Mar

L’Ametlla de Mar is located on the Costa Dorada on the Eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain; about 45 minutes drive from Reus airport.

L'Ametlla de Mar is very quite and peaceful place, but one where you will find all necessary amenities, including a supermarket, good restaurants and bars, a marina, scuba diving, bars, 1 open air disco and beautiful virgin beaches.

The golden sandy beaches are the stars of the coastline where the pine filled air caresses the senses.

The principal industry in L’Ametlla de Mar is fishing, the town incorporates the largest tuna fishing fleet in Spain. The fish auction takes place in the harbour every working day from 4.00 p.m. Except during May and June.

Culture

Visit the Museum of Popular Ceramics whose collection is made up of ceramics from all over the Iberian Peninsula and is considered to be the largest collection of its kind in Europe. There are about 4,500 permanent exhibits.

The Castle of Sant Jordi dAlfama was built in the XIII century, and was the headquarters of the Sant Jordi d'Alfama Order (templars). The present castle is the restored building of another castle built between XVII and XVIII century.

The Order of Sant Jordi dâ'Alfama was founded in 1201 by Peter the Catholic, king of Aragon and count of Barcelona. This name was given to it because the order was given the desert of Alfama, just 5 km north of L’Ametlla.

The town is charming in many ways with good streets to stroll through and a nice harbor with a seawall. It's distant from Barcelona and on the slow train line because of its size. The beach was disappointing.

Coast review

We were 30 minutes from the Costa Dorada. It was worth the drive.

City review

The village of L'Ametlla de Mar is a fishing village. There are lots of bars and restaurants to eat. Most of the shops are small so you need to take your time shopping but that's part of the charm. Everyone was very friendly. Our children enjoyed the play area in one of the squares.

Coast review

There are lots of small coves and sandy beaches. None of them seemed to get crowded. In fact we had one lovely beach to ourselves one day. Can particularly recommend Sant Jordi beach which is only a short distance from Casa Case.
