Los Gigantes

Located at the western point of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, you find the captivating resort of Los Gigantes, literally translated means The Giants. It takes its name from the ancient and majestic mountain range that soar up behind the resort, creating an impressive backdrop to this tranquil resort.

Although a popular resort for Northern Europeans, Los Gigantes is a far cry from some of the more animated party resorts that you expect of Tenerife. Beautiful scenery, sunshine – it boasts more hours of sunshine than any other part of the island, and calms aquamarine seas are what pull tourists to Los Gigantes time and time again.

Around Los Gigantes town
Los Gigantes is a small resort, perfectly formed, you could say. Amenities are sufficient for a holiday resort; there are a couple of smaller supermarkets, which provide basic supplies, and a bigger supermarket at the neighbouring resort of Playa la Arena, which is just a few minutes bus ride away. Aside from this there are the usual tourist and souvenir offerings.

Eating Out
Los Gigantes is very much adapted for the British market, and you will see this in the choice of bars and restaurants. That is not to say that you should expect poor cuisine, most of the restaurants focus on home cooking British grub, and it’s good.

There are also restaurants that serve typical Canarian cuisine, using local produce and seafood. You won’t be disappointed in the choice Los Gigantes has to offier.

Beaches
The beach at Los Gigantes is not its strong point. There is small resort beach with black sands, which is found beside the small harbour. Here you will find a handful of sun loungers and toilets. However, the views are truly spectacular, the sea warm and calm.

Close by there is an open air rock pool, located at Crab Island, which provides a perfect spot for some secluded sunbathing and swimming, and from where you can enjoy stunning views across to the island of La Gomera.

Holidaymakers can also spend the day lounging at the El Laguillo & Club Oasis, with its comfy loungers, swimming pools, restaurant service and again, wonderful views. You can also take part in a round of bowls or other leisure activities.

Dolphins, Whales and Diving
Los Gigantes is set in beautiful natural maritime surroundings and if you enjoy seeing sea life in its natural habitat than we recommend a Sea Safari trip, which sets off from the harbour at Los Gigantes. The area is renowned for whale and dolphin sightings and this is the best way to experience the local species. There are, in fact, over 28 species of whale and dophin species around Los Gigantes, including pilot, minke, sperm and even killer whales.

If you are a scuba diving enthusiastic, then Los Gigantes is a great destination. Below the sea is said to be as dramatic as the soaring cliffs above the sea. There is a diving centre in Los Gigantes, who are experienced in taking about both beginners and experienced divers. You can also hook up with a local fishing operator and set sail on the high seas to catch Tuna and Barracuda.

Climate
The Canary Islands enjoy practically all year round good weather and Tenerife is no exception. They are nicknamed the Islands of Eternal Spring and temperatures rarely drop below 16ºC and rise to around 30ºC in the summer. The climate is influenced by the island close proximity to North Africa. Los Gigantes enjoys an especially privileged climate, boasting most hours of sunshine throughout the year than any other part of the island.

City review

Los Gigantes is beautiful - the cliffs are stunning, there is a lovely square for a morning coffee 'al fresco', small but safe & clean beach. There are several small shops to supply most of the things you would need during your stay if you didn't want to leave the local area and plenty of cafes & bars. The Tourist Information staff are very helpful & the local doctor was very quick to respond to a call from a couple in a different apartment. The buses to local areas run fairly regularly and there is a beautiful coastal footpath which is well worth finding (not sign posted and not clear on the local map so you would need to ask).
